Gillett girls team, Hanson, Peterson qualify for state cross-country meet

The Gillett Secondary School girls cross-country team and a pair of boys runners qualified for state after competing in the Division 3 Manitowoc Lutheran Sectional on Saturday.

The Gillett girls won a competitive race with a team score of 44, edging Sevastopol and Lourdes Academy (46 each). Sylvia Hansen, Carleigh Kaczmarek, Ryann Wagner, Angela Mosconi, Megan Wagner, Laney DeBauch and Alaina Herzog formed Gillett's team.

The Gillett boys narrowly missed qualifying for state after posting a team score of 65, but Derek Hanson and Evan Peterson still qualified for state as individuals. Sheboygan Area Lutheran (24) was first and Manitowoc Lutheran (59) second to qualify for state as teams.

Like they have all season, Hansen, Kaczmarek and Ryann Wagner led the way for the Gillett girls.

Hansen finished sixth in 20 minutes, 7.9 seconds. Kaczmarek and Ryann Wagner took seventh and eighth with times of 21:10.7 and 21:12, respectively.

Mosconi (22:59.8) placed 21st and Megan Wagner (23:10.9) 23rd. DeBauch (23:46.5) took 30th and Herzog (24:12.4) 31st.

Hanson was the top finisher in the boys race, completing the course in 16:46.1. Peterson earned his spot at state with a 10th-place finish in 17:45.7.

Rounding out the Gillett boys team was Riley Engebretsen (18:43.1), Ben Matczak (19:05.8), Wyatt Wilz (22:41.6), Garrett Klein (23:57.8) and Grayson Klein (24:32.2).

Suring's Olivia Noack and Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op's Max Beyer also competed in the sectional as individuals.

Noack was unable to complete the race. Beyer finished the course in 19:43.5.

The Gillett state qualifiers are scheduled to run at Maple Grove Venues in West Salem next Saturday. Times for the start of the girls and boys races have not been announced yet.
