Frederick J. Sleeter

Frederick Joseph Sleeter, 87, of Suring, passed away surrounded by family on Dec. 11, 2023.

Fred was born to Harold and Martha Sleeter on March 8, 1936, in Iron Mountain, Michigan. He was a loving husband, supportive father, devoted grandfather and a caring brother.

He began farming in 1945 as a child and continued doing so with his wife, Cheryl, on their farm starting in 1963. He graduated from Suring High School in 1954 and joined the U.S. Army in 1959. In his retirement years, he was a school bus driver for the Suring School District and worked for the township of Bagley. Fred was also a member of the Suring School Board and the Hickory Church of Christ Board for many years.

Fred loved the Packers, Badgers, Brewers, Suring Eagles and, of course, John Deere tractors and machinery. However, his biggest passion, by far, was his family — he loved watching his kids and grandkids play sports and had unwavering support for his family.

Fred is survived by his wife of 60 years, Cheryl Sleeter, and daughter, Kelly (Mark) Fisher. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Stevie (Matthew Carlson) Sleeter, Jordyn (Dustin) Ermis, Tyler Fisher, Autumn Fisher, Greta (Josh Reed) Sleeter; brothers, Al (Pat) Sleeter, Rodney (Dianna) Sleeter; sisters-in-law, Barb Sleeter, Ellen (Robert) Hudovernik; brothers-in-laws Fred Kopatz Jr., Randy (Barb) Tachick, Dennis Tachick; and various great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Fred was preceded in death by by his son, Wayne Sleeter; parents, Harold and Martha Sleeter; brothers, Dale Sleeter, Bob Sleeter; sisters, Alice Sleeter, Betty Kopatz, Rena Hoffman; brother-in-law, Elger Hoffman; sister-in-law, Nancy Sleeter; nephews, Andy Sleeter, Mike Sleeter, Craig (Ronnie) Kopatz; and niece, Janet Sleeter.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, at Hickory Church from 1 p.m. until the funeral service at 3 p.m. with Pastor Steve Anthes officiating. Military rites will immediately follow the funeral. The family also invites attendees to a meal after the service. Fred will be interred in Hickory Cemetery.

Special thanks from the family to Unity Hospice Care and the Meadowbrook nursing home staff for their compassionate care.
