Franklin St. closed for gas leak investigation

Residents evacuated

Bill Mott, Shawano Fire Department captain, left, gestures with a gas detector as he describes what he found at 116 S. Franklin St. on Oct. 24 with Assistant Chief Chuck Felts. Firefighters had ventilated the house as a precaution. The firefighters and police responded to a WE Energies contractor cutting a gas line in the 100 block south of West Green Bay Street about 10:22 a.m., according to Dan Mauel, Shawano police chief. Mauel added that residents in the block were asked to evacuate for safety reasons and the street was closed. The scene was deemed safe about an hour later, residents were allowed to return, and the street was reopened, Mauel said.
