Florence Birr

Florence Birr, 92, Gillett, formerly Oconto Falls, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 9, 2024, in the comfort of Serenity Gardens.

She was born Feb. 26, 1931, in the Town of Morgan to Maynard and Nora (Gaertig) Aprill. Florence grew up in the Town of Morgan, where she was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Following graduation from Gillett High School, she attended nursing school in Milwaukee and received her LPN degree.

On Jan. 6, 1951, she married Alvin Birr, and the couple had six children together. Florence lived most of her life in the Oconto Falls area where she was employed at Community Memorial Hospital for many years, served as an EMT for the local ambulance service and provided in-home care for numerous families.

Survivors are her five children, Edna “Sue” Schuettpelz, Sobieski, Henry (Beth) Birr, Brainerd, Minnesota, Audrey Arneson, Krakow, Dick (Julie) Birr, New Berlin, and Debra (Ron) Carter, Hutchinson, Minnesota; two brothers, Byron “Bud” (Mae) Aprill, Pulaski, and Herbert (Connie) Aprill, Oconto Falls; three sisters, Evelyn (John) Cayo, Green Bay, Joanne Tinsler, Boise, Idaho, and Loretta “Lolly” Pleshek, Gresham; one sister-in-law, Velma Aprill, Morgan; 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and good friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, George Birr; one grandson, David Schuettpelz; two unnamed infant sisters; infant sister, Verneita; infant brother, Kenneth; and three brothers, Donald, Richard and Gwen “Butch” Aprill; and two brothers-in-law, Ronald Dinse and Edward “Pete” Pleshek.

Visitation will be held after 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in the Town of Morgan until the time of service. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church with Pastor Katy Tomlanovich officiating. Burial will follow in the Town of Morgan Cemetery.

The Birr family would like to thank Serenity Gardens, Unity Hospice, and Herb and Connie Aprill for their care and concern given Florence during their time together.
