Three people in Wisconsin who filed a federal lawsuit alleging widespread fraud in absentee voting, including in Menominee County, have dropped the lawsuit.
A court filing Monday didn't give a reason. Attorney James Bopp said he could not say why the lawsuit was dropped because of attorney-client privilege.
The lawsuit had sought to exclude election ballots in Milwaukee, Dane and Menominee counties. All three went strongly for President-elect Joe Biden, who defeated Trump by about 20,500 votes in the state.
The lawsuit had alleged voters in the three counties may have bypassed state law requiring voters to provide a photo ID by declaring themselves "indefinitely confined" due to the coronavirus pandemic. The suit also took issue with clerks' abilities to take corrective actions to correct errors related to witnesses' addresses on absentee ballots, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission has said there's no evidence of any fraud or irregularity in the state's presidential election. Counties were expected to finish certifying the results this week. When their canvass is final, Trump has a one-day window to request a recount that he must pay for.
Menominee County’s Clerk, Laure Pecore, had been named as a defendant in that suit.
“Menominee County wants to ensure our constituents that we believe any allegation challenging the manner in which the election was conducted in this County is unfounded. Local officials have followed all laws and regulations and have worked tirelessly to ensure that the unique difficulties presented by this election have not affected the validity of its results,” a statement from the Menominee County and Town of Menominee Board of Supervisors said.
The plaintiffs alleged without evidence that absentee voting is rife with widespread fraud and that votes in those counties should not be included in the state’s final election certification, which would then give Wisconsin to President Donald Trump.
There remained no evidence of any wrongdoing, fraud or irregularity in Wisconsin’s presidential election, as counties worked to wrap up the certification of their votes and their estimates of how much it would cost to recount them, the state’s top elections official said.
The lawsuit was one of several being brought on behalf of Trump in an effort to change the outcome of the presidential election.
