Dorothy S. Pethke

Dorothy Susin Pethke, age 104, of Suring, passed away peacefully on Nov. 29, 2023.

She was born on Nov. 23, 1919, to the late Albert and Louise (Duranso) Rahn in the Town of How. Dorothy attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hayes her entire life; she was baptized, attended school, confirmed, married and now will be laid to rest there. Dorothy married Herman Pethke on March 8, 1941. The couple were married for 43 years and raised two children, Alice and Allen. They rented and worked a farm together until 1973, when they bought their first home in Maple Valley on Golf Course Road.

Dorothy worked many different places after farming, including babysitting, apple picking at Bartz’s, the canning factory in Gillett, cleaning homes and businesses, seamstress work for many in the town and made garland at what she called the “brush factory.”

She was a very active participant at her church and in her community. Dorothy spent many hours making world relief quilts, helping others get to appointments, working at the Green Bay Thrift Store, visiting shut-ins and volunteering at the nursing home in Suring. She has even received a Volunteer of the Year Award in acknowledgment for her many acts of service.

Dorothy had the God-given gift of hospitality. She had prepared many beds, meals and desserts (especially chocolate chip cookies) for visiting family and guests. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, making quilts, gardening (veggies and flowers) and baking.

Dorothy is survived by her son-in-law, John Thren; daughter-in-law, Christine Pethke; grandchildren, Steve (Lenore) Thren, Stacie (Spencer) Campbell, Tanya (Ed) Brady, Shelly (Kurt) Gardner; granddaughter-in-law, Laura Pethke; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Natalie, Nolan and Evan, Tanner and Brayden, Cameron and Kendra; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
