FREEDOM — Clintonville High School sophomore Jesse Wilson placed first at the North Eastern Conference Championships on Saturday at Irish Waters Golf Course.

Wilson also won the conference title last year as a freshman. He finished the course in 16 minutes, 48.52 seconds on Saturday after claiming the top spot in 2018 with a time of 16:49.64.

Wilson was battling a pair of Freedom runners for the top spot the entire race. The sophomore was able to overcome a late deficit for the first-place finish.

“I got a little bit of energy there at the end and I’m just like, ‘I’m going to try and get him.’ And it worked out,” said Wilson, who also said the finish gives him a confidence boost heading into sectionals.

The Truckers will compete in the Division 2 Tomahawk Sectional at Edgewater Country Club on Saturday.

Wilson’s top finish helped the Clintonville boys team place sixth. The Clintonville girls did not qualify for a team score with only four runners in action.

Cameron Mauel (17:58.44) took 19th in the boys race, while Jasmine Wilson (22:17.32) came in 19th in the girls race.

Rounding out the boys team was Cody Carrico (19:35.43), Brody Prill (20:03.74) and Kyle Tennie (20:33.59).

Kayla Klemp (22:58.18), Allison Smejkal (25:18.63) and Katie Lamberies (28:41.61) were the other girls runners.
