SHAWANO — Shawano County has called an emergency County Board meeting for Wednesday at 3 p.m. amid a pending cap on large gatherings due to the COVID-19 coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the board’s March 25 meeting has been canceled, according to County Clerk Pam Schmidt.

Administrative Coordinator Brent Miller said there is some county business that must be approved by the board before gathering limits go into effect.

“We’re trying to beat the thing where they say no more than 10 people at a meeting,” he said.

There are 26 County Board members, not including one vacant seat, and four staff members who typically attend, along with several department heads.

The 10-person meeting limit was announced Monday by the White House.

“I don’t know when it goes into effect,” Miller said. “They’re only talking about it. Things are changing by the minute.”

The agenda for the emergency meeting includes an emergency declaration and pandemic policy, along with some items that the county is up against deadline to get passed, such as setting the salaries for the county clerk, register of deeds and treasurer.

“That has to be done by April 1,” Miller said.

A proposed Second Amendment sanctuary resolution that was scheduled for the March 25 meeting will not be part of Wednesday’s agenda, putting that measure in limbo while the health crisis and meeting restrictions continue.
