College Highlights (Jan. 28)

UW-La Crosse

Clintonville High School graduate Sami Smejkal turned in a pair of strong finishes for the UW-La Crosse women’s swim team in its 139-103 dual win over UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 25.

Smejkal was on the first-place finishing 200-yard medley relay team that posted a time of 1 minute, 53.5 seconds. As an individual, Smejkal placed third in the 100 butterfly (1:03.32).

Smejkal also came in ninth in the 50 freestyle (27:0).

UW-Eau Claire

Marion graduate Kalyssa Watters competed in two events for the UW-Eau Claire women’s track and field team at the UW-Stevens Point Triangular on Jan. 25.

Watters finished fifth in the weight throw (44 feet, 6.25 inches) and sixth in the shot put (40-04).

UW-Green Bay

Bonduel graduate Clare Martell placed in the top three in all three events she competed in for the UW-Green Bay women’s swim team in its 172-127 dual win over UW-Milwaukee.

Martell took first in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.27) and second in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.65).

She was also on the 200 medley relay team that placed third in 1:49.88.

Wausau

Gresham graduate Drew Haffner turned in a strong game to help the Wausau Huskies to a 117-50 win over the Richland Roadrunners on Jan. 25.

Haffner scored 13 points, hitting two 3-pointers amongst his five field goals. He also had six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Saginaw Valley State

Shawano graduate Tori DePerry earned her first start for the Saginaw Valley State women’s basketball team over the past week.

She started for the team in its 74-64 loss to Wayne State on Jan. 23. DePerry scored two points and grabbed two rebounds in nine minutes of game action.

In the team’s 101-47 loss to second-ranked Ashland on Jan. 25, DePerry played 13 minutes off the bench. She scored two points.

St. Norbert

Shawano graduate Jeffrey Green swam in three events for the St. Norbert men’s swim team in the Wisconsin Private College Championship on Jan. 25.

Green was a part of the 200 medley relay team that took third in 1:42.76.

As an individual, Green placed 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.72) and 16th in the 100 butterfly (1:01.02).

Utah State Eastern

Gresham graduate Christian Haffner played 27 minutes in the Utah State Eastern men’s basketball team’s 67-61 victory over Colorado of Southern Idaho on Jan. 23.

He scored seven points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers and a free throw. Haffner also tallied two rebounds and a steal.
