College Highlights (Feb. 5)

Des Moines Area

Christian Haffner, a Gresham High School graduate, helped the Des Moines Area Community College (Iowa) men’s basketball team split a pair of games last week.

In a 90-88 setback to Marshalltown Community College (Iowa) on Jan. 27, Haffner started and played 27 minutes. He recorded 14 points, two steals and two assists. Haffner hit four 3-pointers.

In the team’s 71-62 victory over Iowa Lakes Community College on Jan. 30, Haffner started again and played 33 minutes. The Gresham grad tallied nine points and hit two more 3-pointers.

Winona State

Wittenberg-Birnamwood graduate Maddy Pietz competed in two events for the Winona State University (Minnesota) women’s track and field team during a 94-57 dual loss to Mankato State on Jan. 30.

Pietz posted a time of 25.3 seconds to come in sixth in the 200-meter dash.

The Witt-Birn grad was also on the 4x400 relay team that placed first with a time of 3:51.51.

North Iowa Area

Oconto Falls graduate Samantha Coron stuffed the stat sheet for the North Iowa Area Community College women’s volleyball team in a pair of matches last week.

In a five-set loss to Hawkeye Community College (Iowa) on Jan. 26, Coron tallied two attack kills, seven digs, four assists and two service aces.

In a five-set victory over Northeast Community College (Nebraska) on Jan. 28, Coron finished with 13 digs and six assists.

Lindenwood

Nate Trepanier, an Oconto Falls graduate and wrestler for the Lindenwood University (Missouri) team, dropped a tight match against Iowa State on Jan. 30.

Trepanier dropped a 4-3 decision while wrestling at the 165-pound weight class.

Bemidji State

Witt-Birn graduate and volleyball player for Bemidji State University Taylor Nier was a recipient of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction Award.

To be eligible for the honor, athletes must be seniors who have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.75 or higher, are exhausting their eligibility and are on track to graduate.

Carroll

Oconto Falls graduate Sammy Shallow played three minutes and scored two points for the Carroll University women’s basketball team in its season-opening 79-56 win over Elmhurst University (Illinois) on Jan. 28.

Shallow scored her points from the free-throw line.

Saginaw Valley State

Shawano graduate Tori DePerry helped the Saginaw Valley State University (Michigan) women’s basketball team to a 2-1 record over the past week.

DePerry tallied 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals in SVSU’s 76-72 victory over Northwood University (Michigan) on Jan. 26.

SVSU split a pair of games against UW-Parkside on Jan. 29-30. In a 65-55 loss on Jan. 29, DePerry posted eight points, four rebounds and two steals. She contributed five points, seven rebounds and two steals in a 76-69 win Jan. 30.
