College Highlights (Feb. 4)

Saginaw Valley State

Shawano Community High School graduate Tori DePerry turned in a pair of strong games for the Saginaw Valley State women’s basketball team over the past week.

In a start against Michigan Tech on Feb. 1, DePerry scored 14 points after knocking down five field goals and four free throws. She also had five rebounds, a steal and a block in the team’s 85-77 victory.

During a 71-66 loss to Northern Michigan on Jan. 30, DePerry scored 13 points off the bench, knocking down five field goals and three free throws. She also tallied four rebounds, a steal and a block in her 19 minutes of action.

UW-Eau Claire

Marion graduate Kalyssa Watters won the women’s shot while competing for the UW-Eau Claire track and field team at the Warren Bowlus Multi & Open on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

Watters won the event with a throw of 42 feet, 8.25 inches. She delivered the throw on her sixth and final attempt.

The senior also competed in the weight throw, coming in sixth with a throw of 46-0.5.

Utah State Eastern

Gresham graduate Christian Haffner turned in a pair of 20-point efforts for the Utah State Eastern men’s basketball team over the past week.

In the team’s 105-87 win over Colorado Northwest on Feb. 1, Haffner scored 24 points. Seven of his eight field goals were 3-pointers. Haffner also had two rebounds and two assists in the contest.

Haffner posted 22 points in the team’s 76-70 loss to Snow College on Jan. 30. He made six 3-pointers among his second field goals and also tallied three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

St. Norbert

Shawano graduate Jeffrey Green competed in three events for the St. Norbert men’s swim team in its 121-89 dual loss to Lake Forest on Feb. 1.

Green was on the 200-meter freestyle relay team that placed second in 1 minute, 40.19 seconds.

As an individual, he placed fourth in the 50 freestyle (26.33) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (59.53).

UW-La Crosse

Clintonville graduate Sami Smejkal continued her solid freshman season for the UW-La Crosse women’s swim team, competing in three events in the team’s 200-94 dual win over UW-Whitewater on Feb. 1.

Smejkal placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:02.1) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:06.28).

Smejkal was also on the 200 medley relay team that finished second in 1:52.16.

Wausau

Gresham graduate Drew Haffner contributed in several areas on the floor, but it wasn’t enough for the Wausau Huskies to take down the Marshfield Marauders on Jan. 29. Marshfield won 97-87.

Haffner scored two points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out two assists. He also had a steal.
