College Highlights (Feb. 19)

Carroll

Oconto Falls High School graduate Sammy Shallow played 13 minutes during the Carroll University women’s basketball team’s 78-51 loss to Elmhurst University (Illinois) on Feb. 13.

Shallow hit a 3-pointer, grabbed a rebound and dished out an assist during her time on the floor.

Saginaw Valley State

Shawano graduate Tori DePerry helped the Saginaw Valley State University (Michigan) women’s basketball team’s split a pair of games against Ferris State University (Michigan) last weekend.

In a 65-58 loss on Feb. 12, DePerry accumulated seven points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 23 minutes off the bench.

The following day, the Shawano graduate played 25 minutes during the team’s 67-52 win. She totaled seven points, four rebounds and two assists. Three of the rebounds were on the offensive end of the court.

Rockhurst

Shawano grad Averi Vomastic put together two strong matches to help the Rockhurst University (Missouri) volleyball team to a pair of wins last week.

In Rockhurst’s 25-16, 25-14, 25-22 win over William Jewell College (Missouri) on Feb. 9, Vomastic finished with 10 attack kills, seven digs, an assist and a block.

In the team’s 25-27, 25-20, 25-13, 23-25, 15-11 victory over Truman State University (Missouri) on Feb. 12, Vomastic posted nine attack kills, nine digs and two blocks.

UW-Eau Claire

Suring graduate Mitch Stegeman and Oconto Falls grad Autumn Canavera each turned in strong finishes for the UW-Eau Claire track and field teams during a dual against UW-Stout on Feb. 13. The UWEC women won 91-51, while the men lost 83-64.

Stegeman was the top finisher in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 1.25 inches. He also placed 11th in the shot put with a top throw of 32 feet, 11.25 inches.

Canavera came in seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:29.11. She was also on the third-place finishing 4x400 relay team that earned a time of 4:30.42.

UW-Stevens Point

Shawano graduate Keith Tourtillott made his college debut for the UW-Stevens Point wrestling team last week.

In the team’s 20-15 win over UW-Platteville on Feb. 9, Tourtillott won an 8-4 decision in a 197-pound weight class exhibition match.

Tourtillott wrestled three exhibition matches when the team hosted UW-Oshkosh and UW-Eau Claire on Feb. 9. He went 2-1 in those matches, winning by a 7-4 decision and by pin.

Hannah Flak, a Wittenberg-Birnamwood graduate and current swimmer for the UW-Stevens Point women’s team took part in three events during a dual against UW-Whitewater on Feb. 13. No team scores were kept.

Flak placed second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.18. She placed eighth in the 50 freestyle (27.83).

Flak was also on the fourth-place finishing 200 medley relay team that posted a time of 2:00.93.

Oakland City

Bowler graduate Reanne Kietlinski played in a pair of games for the Oakland City University (Indiana) women’s basketball team over the past week.

In the team’s 78-70 win over Brescia University (Kentucky) on Feb. 9, Kietlinski played 10 minutes. She grabbed three defensive rebounds during her time on the floor.

In a 100-91 overtime loss to Asbury University (Kentucky) on Feb. 13, Kietlinski played 11 minutes. The Bowler grad tallied four points, two steals, two assists and two rebounds.

Des Moines Area

Gresham graduate Christian Haffner started a pair of games for the Des Moines Area Community College (Iowa) men’s basketball team last week.

In a 75-74 win over North Iowa Area Community College on Feb. 13, Haffner hit four 3-pointers on his way to a 20-point performance. He also tallied four rebounds, three assists and a steal.

In the team’s 70-58 loss to Southwestern Community College (Iowa) on Feb. 10, Haffner grabbed a pair of rebounds.

North Iowa Area

Oconto Falls grad Samantha Coron helped the North Iowa Area Community College women’s volleyball team to a 2-1 record over the last week.

During a 25-19, 25-15, 25-15 loss to Des Moines Area Community College on Feb. 9, Coron tallied six digs.

Coron recorded seven digs and six assists in the team’s 25-15, 25-14, 25-21 victory over Iowa Lakes Community College on Feb. 11.

The Oconto Falls grad contributed 11 digs, seven assists, six attack kills and five service aces during a 19-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-10, 15-11 win over Southeastern Community College on Feb. 14.
