Clara June Downing Schmidt

Clara June Downing Schmidt, 84, of Shawano, passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at her home. Born on May 8, 1929, in Elton, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Alma (Fultz) Mauk. On April 17, 1948, she was united in marriage to Jack Downing in Mount Pleasant, Ind. The couple made their home and raised their family in Losantville, Ind., and later in Hagerstown, Ind. June worked at Abbott’s Candy Shop in Hagerstown and was a member of the Harris Chapel Church of the Nazarene in Selma, Ind. Jack preceded her in death on April 19, 2001. In 2002 June moved to the Shawano area to be near her sisters. On March 14, 2006, she was united in marriage to Martin Schmidt. June enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, bird watching and traveling with her husband, Martin. June is survived by her husband, Martin; three children, Jim Downing and Jeff Downing, of Dallas, Texas, and Jonita Downing, of Mansfield, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Kathe Downing, of Anderson, Calif.; stepchildren, Steve (Sharon) Schmidt and Lisa (Billy) McGinnis, of Melrose, N.M., Jennifer (Terry) Barr and Mike (Wendy) Messenger, of Wauconda, Ill., Cindy Thomas, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Meredith Umsted, of Urbana, Ohio; two brothers, Benny (Mary) Mauk, of Elton, and Sam (Ronnie) Mauk, of Phlox; and three sisters, Lorraine Safford, of Omaha, Neb., Sherri Verburg, of Des Moines, Wash., and Laurie (Jerry) McGee, of White Lake. June also leaves behind close friends, Barney and Dorothy Johnson ,of Losantville, Ind., and their family. June was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack; her son, Tim Downing; her parents; a stepmother, Thelma Mauk; two sisters, LaVonne (Leonard) Schmidt and Juanita (Art) Swim; and two brothers, Glen Mauk and Al (Sylvia) Mauk. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at the Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano with the Rev. Jim Frank officiating. Burial will be in the church on the Hill Cemetery in Elton at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Visitation will be held at the funeral home in Shawano on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
