None of the state forests near Shawano or Oconto counties have Christmas tree permits available.

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

According to the U.S. Forest Service website, “a permit costs $5 and allows you to harvest a tree up to 20 feet tall, including trees along roads and trails as long as aesthetics and safety are considered.” White cedar and hemlock trees may not be cut.

Fourth graders can get a free permit if they present a voucher from the Every Kid in a Park initiative, available at everykidoutdoors.gov. Permits are available at the Lakewood ranger station, 15085 Highway 32, Lakewood, 715-276-6333 or see fs.usda.gov/cnnf.
