When choosing child care, there are many factors to consider, including the type of care, price, availability, quality of care and location.

The Wisconsin Department of Children and Families’ licensed child care directory lists 13 centers in Shawano County as of March 5.

As of that date, there were three licensed family child care centers — one each in Gresham, Wittenberg and Shawano, and each with a capacity of eight.

There were eight licensed group centers, including one each in Bonduel (75 capacity), Bowler (28), Birnamwood (20) and Wittenberg (20), and four in Shawano (277 total capacity).

There were also two public school programs. The Bowler program has a capacity of 37, while the Tigerton program has a capacity of 45.

A Shawano Country Progress Summit about the local child care dilemma will be presented March 20 at the Crescent Ballroom at Stubborn Brothers Brewery in downtown Shawano.

Speakers will share local data about child care concerns, including survey results from the Shawano School District and the Shawano Area Young Professionals (saYPro).

Speakers will be Bec Kurzynske, M3 director of employee benefits; Kurt Krizan, superintendent of Shawano School District; Wendy Crawford, Boys and Girls Club of Shawano board member; and Sam Sperberg, saYPro president.

The cost is $25 for members of the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce and $30 for non-members. Admission includes heavy appetizers and two beverage tickets.

Registration begins at 4:30 p.m., followed by the presentation from 5-7 p.m. and networking from 7-8 p.m.

The summit is presented by the Shawano School District, Shawano County Economic Progress Inc., Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College-Shawano and saYPro.

Sponsors include AbbyBank, Menominee Casino Resort, North Star Mohican Casino Resort and ThedaCare.
