Charlotte B. (Philippi) Klatt

Charlotte B. (Philippi) Klatt, 95, Suring, formerly of Underhill, passed away Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019.

She was born in Suring on Oct. 31, 1923, the seventh of eight children to John and Katharine (Holl) Philippi. Charlotte attended Suring schools where she enjoyed playing the clarinet and was a 1941 graduate of Suring High School. She went on to serve as a candy striper during World War II.

Charlotte enjoyed dancing, singing, playing cards, and gardening. She was quite versatile and enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies and crafts. Her favorite beverage was Sun Drop.

She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Gillett and, for a short time, All Saints Catholic Church in Berlin.

For many years she ran the pickle grading station in Underhill. After that she worked at the glove factory in Gillett, and most summers people could find her selling sweet corn in front of the Gillett Milling Company.

Charlotte is survived by her four children, Catharine Hamblin, of San Antonio, Texas, Mervin Charles (Nancy) Brunette Jr., of Ripon, Gilbert Petersen Jr., of Des Moines, Iowa, and Crystal Carson, of Verona. Charlotte is also survived by her son-in-law, Lyman Wocking. She has 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Charlotte “Charrie” Wocking; and her three husbands, Mervin Brunette Sr., Gilbert Petersen Sr., and Arnold Klatt.

Friends and relatives called on the family on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, from 5-7 p.m. at Legacy Funeral Chapels, 108 E. Main St., Gillett. Visitation continued Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019, from 9-10:45 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, 127 Garden Ave., Gillett. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert NiNi officiating. Burial was to follow in the Underhill Cemetery.
