Athlete Profile: Morgan Blazek

While a number of high school sports are having to take breaks during their regular seasons as schools go virtual, golf teams were already nearing the end of their season. The Oconto Falls High School girls team extended its season a bit longer after qualifying for sectionals, with senior Morgan Blazek tying for the second-best score on the team.

Blazek shot an 18-hole round of 110 at the Division 2 Waupaca Regional at Foxfire Golf Club on Oct. 1, which gave her and the team another chance to compete at sectionals. Blazek’s round tied her for 13th among all the golfers in action.

Blazek served as the Panthers No. 3 golfer this fall.

Q: When did your interest in golf begin?

A: I would say my interest started when I was in sixth grade. My parents (Sam and Connie) signed me up for golf lessons at River Island Golf Course.

Q: What is your favorite part about the golf season?

A: My favorite part is getting to meet the girls from other schools and start a friendship with them. It’s always nice golfing with friends.

Q: What has golf taught you over the years?

A: Golf has taught me how to work my hardest and push myself to be better and just keep practicing.

Q: Talk about what kind of work the team put in over the past few years and how it all paid off in your senior years with a sectional berth.

A: Practicing during the summer and not just at the beginning of the season. Like if we practice beforehand, we won’t have as many mistakes to fix.

Q: With so much uncertainty surrounding sports this fall, how special was it for you to get a season and then take advantage of it and accomplish a huge team goal?

A: It was amazing because we knew we might have a chance of winning sectionals. It made me feel great knowing we had made it this far in the season without it being canceled.

Q: Before you hit the course for a meet, do you have any rituals you go through?

A: I usually just tell myself to stay focused on the ball and not pick my head up. I usually only do a few practice hits to just get me warmed up.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Oconto Falls girls golf team?

A: I would say this year because I played No. 3 out of five girls. I never thought that I would ever make it to that place on varsity.

Q: Favorite TV show, movie and musical artist?

A: TV show — “The Vampire Diaries.” Movie — “Tammy.” Musical artist — Iann Dior.

Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know.

A: I love to read.

Q: What’s the greatest piece of advice you have ever been told?

A: To not let one roadblock in your life stop you from living your best life.

Q: What are some things you hope to accomplish after graduating high school?

A: Graduate from college as a veterinary technician in small and large animals.
