Athlete Profile: Kaleb Lowney
The Shawano Community High School football team is off to a 2-1 start this season, which helped the team get recognized among some of the state’s best. Senior running back Kaleb Lowney has been a big part of the team’s offensive success, both as a runner and pass-catcher.
In the team’s season-opening 27-0 win over Seymour on Sept. 25, Lowney rushed for over 100 yards and finished with over 150 total yards.
Shawano picked up a 44-27 win over New London on Oct. 2, with Lowney again rushing for over 100 yards and also scoring two rushing touchdowns. After the win, the Hawks moved up to No. 7 in Division 3 of the wissports.net coaches poll with their 2-0 start.
Despite Friday’s 44-18 loss to Xavier — who was ranked No. 2 in Division 4 — Lowney still had a big impact on the game. Lowney rushed for a touchdown and also caught a 77-yard touchdown pass.
Q: When did your interest in football begin?
A: It began ever since I could remember. Being a Lowney, football is in your blood.
Q: What is your favorite part about the football season?
A: I’d say just having the opportunity to play this year since so many other kids do not have that opportunity right now.
Q: What has the game of football taught you over the years?
A: This sport is like no other. Teaches you to be physical, patient, disciplined, trusting and so many others. Also teaches you to be mentally prepared in all those aspects.
Q: As a senior, how do you try and lead the team, yet also enjoy your final season?
A: Just think of it as any other year; we got a job, and we gotta get the job done. But being a senior gives me little more responsibility to that job being complete.
Q: A couple games into the season, what does the team need to keep doing well, and what could use improvement?
A: Well, this is the best start Shawano has had in six years. We have a winning mentality. We just gotta keep our minds right and focus on playing the game to the fullest we know we can.
Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Shawano football team?
A: Favorite memory happened this year, shutting out rival Seymour. I believe that was first time in the program we did that, so that was very cool to be part of.
Q: Your team is starting to gain some attention around the state after a strong start. What does that mean to you, especially since you’re a senior this season?
A: As a team we are very happy that we are gaining some recognition, but as a senior, we gotta keep this momentum going into further weeks to keep that same recognition.
Q: Favorite TV show, movie and musical artist?
A: TV show — “Friends.” Movie — War genre movies. Musical artist — Queen.
Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know.
A: I would stick my neck out for anybody. And I am always here for somebody to talk to.
Q: What’s the greatest piece of advice you have ever been told?
A: Keep working hard and eventually it will come. But a quote I work by is: “The hardest walk is walking alone, but it’s the walk that makes you the strongest.”
Q: What are some things you hope to accomplish after graduating high school?
A: Well my plan is to go into law enforcement (K-9), so I hope to accomplish on getting into a good department and hopefully change people’s lives for the good.
