Athlete Profile: Ethan Hischke

Suring senior does it all on basketball court

SURING — The Suring High School boys basketball has enjoyed a solid season on the basketball. Suring senior Ethan Hischke has made his presence felt all over the court for the Eagles.

Hischke averages about 10 points per game, doing most of the scoring from inside the 3-point line. The senior also averages about six rebounds, two assists and two steals per game.

Hischke has scored in double figures in all but one of Suring’s five games since Feb. 14, including a season-high 18 points against Oneida Nation on Feb. 24.

Q: When did your interest in basketball begin?

A: My interest in basketball began when I was very young at the Saturday morning basketball program at Suring. I then transferred to St. Paul Bonduel and started practicing and playing in fifth grade.

Q: What is your favorite part about the basketball season?

A: Playoff basketball has always had a different atmosphere than regular season — it’s do or die, and I love that aspect. The energy is better, fans are crazier and the games mean more.

Q: You are about to enter the postseason in your senior year of high school. Will that motivate you at all on the court knowing each game could be your last at this level of play?

A: Knowing that the next game we lose will be my final high school basketball game will ensure that I give it my all, and leave it all on the court.

Q: Your team has quite a few seniors on it. Just what has it been like to play with those guys over the years?

A: Even though we have many seniors, we haven’t gotten to play all together since freshman year. We have been pulled up one or two at a time until we had basically no shared time on the court. Being able to play with my classmates has been one of my favorite parts of this season.

Q: What does the team need to do well in order to put itself in position to make a strong postseason run?

A: Taking our time on offense is a key part of the game where we often fall short. If we work the ball around to find higher percentage shots, I’m sure we will make a postseason run.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Suring boys basketball team?

A: My favorite part of playing for Suring is the brotherhood that we have formed. I love my team and love competing with them.

Q: Favorite TV show, movie and musical artist?

A: TV show — “Vikings.” Movie — “The Sandlot.” Musical artist — Alan Jackson.

Q: Who is your favorite athlete, and why?

A: My favorite athlete is Giannis (Antetokounmpo) because he has showed his love of the game and his will to win since his rookie year, and I try to match his intensity and heart.

Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know.

A: One thing that not many people know about me is that I grew up on a dairy farm.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do when you are not in school or competing in a high school sport?

A: My biggest hobby outside of school is definitely fishing. I’m on the water as much as I can be.

Q: What’s the greatest piece of advice you have ever been told?

A: That people won’t remember what you say or do, people will remember how you make them feel.

Q: What are some things you hope to accomplish after graduating from high school?

A: I plan on attending UW-Platteville for a degree in engineering. I plan to become a father and teach my kids the lessons that can be taught in sports by coaching.
