Lena senior enjoying last season on court

The Lena High School girls basketball team came into the season off back-to-back one-win seasons. Because of the dedication and leadership shown by players like senior Chloie Potter, the Wildcats already have three wins this season.

In the team’s second win against St. Thomas Aquinas Academy on Dec. 14, Potter had seven points, four steals, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Potter totaled five rebounds, a steal, an assist and two points in a win over Goodman/Pembine in a Lena Holiday Tournament matchup on Dec. 28.

Q: When did your interest in basketball begin?

A: My interest in basketball began when I was in fourth grade. That year was when I realized how much I enjoyed it, and I have been playing ever since.

Q: What is your favorite part about the basketball season?

A: My favorite part about basketball season would have to be the teamwork that is involved with this sport. Not just one person can win a basketball game — it is a team effort, and that is my favorite part about it. Being able to rely on others and being able to achieve goals together as a team is something I have enjoyed these past four years.

Q: What has basketball taught you over the years?

A: Basketball has taught me many things over the years. It has taught me how to deal with success and failure, and to believe in myself. Also that hard work does pay off and lastly, it has taught me how to be a team player on and off the court.

Q: As a senior, how do you help lead your team?

A: As a senior I help lead my team by trying to always stay positive and to support my teammates at all times. I do this because I know that when I was an underclassman, I would get down on myself if I made a mistake during a game, causing me to give up. I wish I had someone who would have told me to not give up and to push and keep going. This is why I lead in this way, because I want my younger teammates to be able to keep that confidence and keep that positivity and not give up.

Q: Do you have any individual goals you hope to achieve or team goals you want to help obtain by the end of this season?

A: One of my personal goals I hope to achieve by the end of the season is to be more vocal and provide more hustle on the court and to create more shots for others on our team.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Lena girls basketball team?

A: My favorite memory of competing on the Lena girls basketball team would have to be the time when I hit a 3 right before the buzzer went off, which then led us into halftime with the lead (against Stockbridge in 2020). I remember the gym erupting and it was a loud, and exciting moment.

Q: What are you going to miss most about high school basketball?

A: The biggest thing that I am going to miss most about high school basketball would have to be playing with my teammates. They are like my second family, and it will be sad to no longer be a part of that next year. I enjoy playing, but I think I love it even more because of the people I am playing with. Being able to have people around you who enjoy playing basketball just as much as you do and are also willing to put in a bunch of effort is something really cool to be a part of.

Q: Favorite TV show, movie, and musical artist?

A: TV show — “Friends.” Movie — I have too many to pick just one! Musical artist — Morgan Wallen.

Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know.

A: One thing about myself that not many people know is that I like to read. I like to read mostly mystery books.

Q: What’s the greatest piece of advice you have ever been told?

A: The greatest piece of advice I have ever been told is that sometimes you have to learn to fail or lose before you can truly succeed or win.

Q: What are some things you hope to accomplish after graduating high school?

A: Some things I hope to accomplish after graduating high school are to attend and graduate from college with a major in the medical field. I’m just not sure of the specific medical area I would like to focus on.
