Shawano senior factor on both ends of court

SHAWANO — The Shawano Community High School boys basketball team was able to match its win total from the 2018-19 season in the fourth game of the current winter season, with senior big man Carter Weisnicht playing a big part in the team’s improvement.

Weisnicht is coming off a second team all-conference honor as a junior and is putting up numbers that could have him land on the first team this season. The senior is averaging around 20 points and 10 rebounds per game.

His 6-foot-8 frame makes him a big presence in the paint, but Weisnicht is also able to step behind the 3-point line and knock down shots consistently, which helps open up the rest of the offense. On defense, he helps alter shots around the rim while racking up plenty of rebounds.

“Carter is a tremendous athlete and his growth both as a basketball player and a young man has been amazing to see over the last four years,” said Shawano boys basketball coach David Ambrosius. “Obviously, with his size he really helps us on both ends of the floor and has always been able to score it at a high rate. But his leadership in the locker room, at practice and on the court has been a huge asset for us so far this season. We will be looking for more of this from him moving forward toward the playoffs.”

Q: When did your interest in basketball begin?

A: My interest in basketball grew stronger over the years of being in hoops and going to all the tournaments as a young kid.

Q: What is your favorite part about the basketball season?

A: It’s during winter so there is not much to do so basketball is one of the main focuses for fans and plays and gives something to do and have fun with.

Q: The team is enjoying better results than last year despite having pretty much the same roster. What’s been the difference this year?

A: Almost everyone came back to play this year and that is a big part of us having a better year than last year. The underclassmen grew and became strong over the offseason and got a better look at what it was like at a higher level, which has helped us seniors out and has taken some weight off our shoulders.

Q: Most post players aren’t able to step away from the basket and hit the 3 as consistently as you. How has being a strong option behind the 3-point line changed the way opponents guard you?

A: Me being able to step outside and knock down some shots helps us out a lot — helps open up the lane and for Brayden (Dickelman) to step in and get a post touch if he has a mismatch.

Q: Do you have any individual goals you’d like to accomplish in your final season?

A: Make it to a sectional final.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Shawano boys basketball team?

A: My freshman year, when Cole Nelson went for a loose ball and flew into Doug Rogers and knocked all his broadcasting equipment off the table.

Q: What are you going to miss most about high school basketball?

A: Making memories with the guys.

Q: Favorite TV show and movie?

A: TV show — “That ’70s Show.” Movie — “Coach Carter.”

Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know.

A: I stopped playing baseball to dedicate myself to basketball.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do when you are not in school or competing in a high school sport?

A: Go up north snowmobiling.

Q: What’s the greatest piece of advice you have ever been told?

A: Stick with your gut and believe in yourself.

Q: What are some things you hope to accomplish after graduating from high school?

A: Hopefully in the next few years get into coaching basketball in my free time.
