Witt-Birn senior helping team settle in to basketball season

WITTENBERG — After losing an all-conference player and several other impact seniors from last year, the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School boys basketball was looking for players to step up. Brendan Resch has done just that for the Chargers this season.

The senior point guard is averaging over 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal per game as the team tries to find its groove on the court.

Resch has scored in double figures in four of five games, including a 19-point outing against Coleman on Dec. 17. He hit four 3-pointers in that game and is averaging over two triples made per game.

“Brendan initiates our offense very effectively with his unselfish play, skilled passing and ability to put people in positions on the floor where they can be successful,” said Witt-Birn coach Garrett Rogowski of Resch. “He is also asked to stop our opponents quickest guard each night. He is a great shooter and a true joy to coach.”

Q: When did your interest in basketball begin?

A: My interest in basketball began in third grade with our Great Northwest League team, but I wasn’t very serious about it until seventh grade.

Q: What is your favorite part about the basketball season?

A: My favorite part of the basketball season would have to be every home game. Playing in front of the home crowd has to be the best feeling out there.

Q: It’s been an up-and-down start to the season for the team so far. What things need improvement to start stacking some wins up?

A: Some things that we need to improve on is passing. We need to move the ball quicker and take better shots to be able to perform to our maximum potential.

Q: What has basketball done for you?

A: For me, basketball has done a lot. It has helped me become a better person, and gain lots of friendships along the way.

Q: As a senior, is there anything you personally hope to accomplish on the basketball court this winter?

A: This being my senior year, I want to make a deep run into playoffs, and I also want to just leave it all out on the court. I don’t want to look back and regret not doing this or that. I want to be able to look back and tell myself “you gave it your all.”

Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Wittenberg-Birnamwood boys basketball team?

A: My favorite memory playing for the Chargers would have to be my sophomore year when I got called up to varsity and I hit my first varsity 3-pointer. It was in the playoffs and it was a close game, so I was very nervous.

Q: What are you going to miss most about high school sports?

A: The thing I’m going to miss most about high school sports will be my teammates. Without the group of guys that surround me, sports wouldn’t be as fun. We all have each others backs.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do when you are not in school or competing in a high school sport?

A: My favorite thing to do other than high school sports is fishing by far. Most of my free time I spend on a lake, whether it’s open water or ice fishing, I’m out there.

Q: Favorite movie, TV show and musical artist?

A: My favorite move is “Kung Fu Panda.” My favorite TV show is “SpongeBob SquarePants,” and my favorite musical artist right now is Roddy Ricch.

Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know?

A: One thing that not many people know about me is that I have a YouTube channel named “Catch More Fish,” feel free to check it out.

Q: What is the greatest piece of advice you have ever been told?

A: The greatest piece of advice I’ve ever been told was from Coach (Garrett) Rogowski. He tells me every game if I start off slow to forget about it and that I need to have short-term memory on the basketball court. That simple phrase can change my whole game because I just forget what the score is, and how I’ve been playing and just play the game how I know I can.

Q: What are some things you hope to accomplish after completing high school?

A: After completing high school, I hope to further my education in college.
