Playoff road gets easier for Bonduel, Menominee Indian boys

The Bonduel and Menominee Indian boys basketball teams saw their playoff road get a bit easier when the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association released division placements and playoff assignments for the 2020-21 season.

Iola-Scandinavia and Lourdes Academy — the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, from this past season — are no longer part of the Division 4 regional pod.

The two teams eventually met in a sectional semifinal, with Iola-Scandinavia advancing. I-S had its shot at state wiped out when the coronavirus canceled the end of the boys season.

MADISON — The Wisconsin Conservation Congress received a record-setting 64,943 responses to the 2020 Spring Hearing Questionnaire featuring topics ranging from baiting and feeding deer to the use of non-toxic ammunition on state-owned land.

Witt-Birn girls basketball team joins loaded regional after move to D4

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association released girls basketball division placements and playoff assignments for the 2020-21 season, with many area teams having their regional pods changed.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood was the only area team to move from its 2019-20 regional pod. Instead of staying in a Division 3 regional, the Chargers dropped to Division 4, joining a loaded regional that includes Bonduel and Menominee Indian.

Golf courses adjusting to guidelines in place

As the state begins its trek toward returning to some form of normalcy, many businesses are doing so facing unique guidelines. Golf courses around the state continue to regain some of the features that make the sport appealing to participants, while other aspects remain absent.

In Gov. Tony Evers Safer at Home order on March 24, golf courses were deemed nonessential, and thus, could not open — even though the weather would have allowed many to do so around that time.

Athlete Profile: Dylan Bierman

BOWLER — While some high school seniors will get the chance to play sports again at the collegiate level, others are preparing to focus solely on their college degrees or work. Bowler senior Dylan Bierman falls under the second category, and it disappoints him that his time playing baseball in high school has come to a close.

Bierman was coming off a junior season in which he landed on the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division honorable mention team. He drove in nine runs and stole five bases in conference play, helping the Panthers to second place in the conference.

BABA delays start of season

The Badger Amateur Baseball Association (BABA) will delay the start of the 2020 season due to the ongoing battle with the COVID-19 virus.

The league will follow all local, state, federal and CDC health regulations as it moves forward with the planning of the 2020 season.

The BABA has cancelled the June 20 all-star/alumni game and historical display that was to celebrate its 75th year.

Athlete Profile: Jacob Groshek

WITTENBERG — High school sports can mean a multitude of things to athletes. For Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School senior Jacob Groshek, the game of baseball was a way to enjoy time with friends while also competing at a high level.

A year ago, Groshek landed on the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division honorable mention team.

Groshek will not get the chance to jump up to the second or first team after the WIAA officially canceled the spring sports season April 21.

Athlete Profile: Megan Konkol

WITTENBERG — While many high school athletes played in multiple sports this school year, not many expected their spring seasons to be ripped away from them. Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School senior Megan Konkol is holding out hope that she will still get out on the softball field this spring to help bring some closure to her high school career.

Konkol landed on the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division second team as a junior after posting a .385 batting average in conference play.

Konkol was an honorable mention pick as a sophomore.

WITTENBERG — With an experienced roster, the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School boys golf team was hoping to make some history this spring by winning a Central Wisconsin Conference title, which would have been the school’s first-ever conference crown. The coronavirus has put that goal on hold for senior Justin Keeney as the rest of the Chargers.

Through three years, Keeney has already put together a strong high school career, making it to sectionals as an individual in his sophomore season and then helping the team reach sectionals last spring.

BOWLER — For most high school athletes, the coronavirus has delayed a spring sport. The virus is postponing two sports for Bowler senior Alyssa Strassburg, who plays softball for Bowler and competes for the Gresham/Bowler track and field team.

As a junior on the softball diamond, Strassburg made the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division first team after posting a .375 batting average and .512 on-base percentage. She drove in seven runs and scored 13 times.
