Caleb Bembenek named athletic director at Tigerton

Caleb Bembenek was named the new athletic director for the high school and middle school in Tigerton.

Bembenek replaces Lance Litchfield, who accepted an AD position at Cochrane-Fountain City.

Bembenek will be entering his first AD job after graduating from UW-Stevens Point with a focus on physical education.

Packers sign 1st-round pick Love, 2nd-round choice Dillon

GREEN BAY — The Green Bay Packers said Wednesday they have signed Utah State quarterback Jordan Love and Boston College running back A.J. Dillon, their top two draft picks.

Green Bay gave the Miami Dolphins a fourth-round draft choice to move up four spots in the first round and take Love 26th overall in the April draft. The Packers chose Dillon at No. 62.

Area schools won’t compete during contact days

When the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association canceled the spring sports season in late April, it left open the opportunity for schools to be able to compete in some of those sports during a 30-day contact period in July.

The month of July is here and the option to compete in games against other high schools is still on the table, but none of the area high schools indicated that they would be participating.

Fans came out in droves as the Shawano Speedway honored its two most recent inductees into the track’s Hall of Fame as Bob Maas and the late Mark Mitchell were honored at intermission. Cheers, smiles, and tears were present as family and friends celebrated the careers of these two men.

DNR hunter safety classes to resume July 13

MADISON — In-person hunter and recreational vehicle education classes will resume July 13 under a set of guidelines and safety protocols released Friday by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ Recreational Safety and Outdoor Skills Section under Phase II of the Wisconsin State Government Bounce Back Plan.

Bear hunting application period for 2021 season opens July 1

MADISON — The application period for the 2021 bear hunting season will open July 1 after the successful completion of legislative review. The application deadline remains Dec. 10, 2020.

ImPACT testing available at home to Witt-Birn athletes

Wittenberg-Birnamwood student-athletes who need to take the ImPACT Test can now complete it from the comfort of their homes.

Witt-Birn Athletic Director Chris Nier made the announcement on Facebook — https://www.facebook.com/groups/WBHSChargers/.

Individuals wanting to take the test from home can email Nier at cnier@wittbirn.k12.wi.us. Nier will then provide a link.

Packers Hall of Fame to open Monday

The Packers Hall of Fame will reopen to visitors and fans on Monday, June 29, the Green Bay Packers announced Thursday.

Closed since March 13 due to the pandemic, the museum will be implementing several new procedures and policies to keep guests safe, including retail-sector, back-to-business precautionary guidelines offered by Brown County Public Health, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation and the CDC to maximize safety in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Herd’s Frank Mason III named 2019-20 NBA G League MVP

OSHKOSH — Wisconsin Herd guard Frank Mason III has been named the 2019-20 NBA G League Most Valuable Player, the league announced Thursday. Mason earned the honor in a vote comprised of the league’s 28 coaches and general managers.

“As was evident by his production and contribution, Frank embraced his opportunity while with us,” said Milwaukee Bucks Vice President of Basketball Operations and Wisconsin Herd General Manager Dave Dean. “It was a privilege to watch him play and develop, and his growth over the course of the season was nothing short of tremendous.”

WIAA board approves winter sports changes

STEVENS POINT — The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control reviewed and acted on coaches committee recommendations impacting winter sports, including the addition of a State Tournament Series for girls wrestling in 2022 and other rule and budget considerations in response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic at its June virtual meeting on Wednesday.
