Brewers' Woodruff easy choice to start season opener

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff is following up his first All-Star appearance by getting his first opportunity to start a season opener.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell announced Friday that Woodruff will get the start when Milwaukee begins the season July 24 against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Kyle Hendricks will be starting for the Cubs.

"It's kind of like the All-Star Game, one of those things they can't take away from you," Woodruff said. "It's a huge honor."

Bucks’ Bledsoe tests positive for the coronavirus

Milwaukee Bucks guard Eric Bledsoe has tested positive for COVID-19, but has said he doesn’t have any symptoms associated with the coronavirus.

Bledsoe hasn’t been with the team since they reported to Orlando last week, the Journal Sentinel reported.

The Bucks began a second training camp early this month but shut it down after someone from the organization tested positive for the coronavirus. They didn’t name the person at the time.

Camp Randall renovation put on hold

Renovation of the south end zone seating area inside Camp Randall Stadium is being put on hold temporarily.

The project was due to begin at the conclusion of the 2020 football season and open by the start of the 2021 campaign. It is now more likely that work will begin sometime in 2021 with a target opening for the 2022 campaign.

Sports suspended at UW System branch campuses

Intercollegiate sports at 10 branch campuses within five University of Wisconsin System institutions have been temporarily suspended for the 2020-21 academic year.

UW-Eau Claire, UW-Green Bay, UW-Oshkosh,UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point are the five institutions that made a joint decision on Tuesday. The 10 campuses affected are in Baraboo, Barron, Fond du Lac, Manitowoc, Marinette, Marshfield, Menasha (Fox Cities), Richland, Sheboygan and Wausau.

Wisconsin teams to wear university crest logo with black ‘W’

Wisconsin plans to have its sports teams wear a university crest logo with a black “W” to show solidarity with Black and other underrepresented communities on campus.

School officials said Wednesday the change would take effect whenever Wisconsin sports teams return to action. They said the black “W” is meant to show support, inclusion and unity from Wisconsin athletes, the athletic department and the university as a whole.

Packers won’t have fans for training camp practices

Bucks will take messages for social change onto the court

Milwaukee Bucks team members will join other NBA players who plan to put messages for social change on the back of their jerseys once games resume at the end of the month.

Both Kyle Korver and Khris Middleton will substitute “Black Lives Matter” for their names on their jerseys.

“I think it’s the most important thing for people to realize,” Middleton said Monday. “That our lives do matter. That’s why I went with it.”

Reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, his brother, Thanasis, and other players have another plan.

The Milwaukee Brewers want to celebrate their golden anniversary by accomplishing something they have never done before.

After reaching the National League Championship Series in 2018 and falling in the NL wild-card game last year, the Brewers are seeking an unprecedented third straight playoff berth during this unusual 60-game season.

The Brewers launched their franchise in 1970. Their only previous back-to-back playoff appearances before the last two years came in 1981-82. Now they will try to make history while dealing with the challenges of playing through a pandemic.

Drivers start to separate themselves from the pack as the auto racing season nears the mid-season point.

With the shortened season, recovering from a bad night becomes very difficult. Ron Berna, Travis Van Straten, Jayden Schmidt, Tanner Westphal and Jordan Bartz began their run to the finish with wins on Saturday at Shawano Speedway.

The IMCA Modified feature saw Jesse Peebles take the early lead and he was leading when a nasty wreck featuring multiple cars brought out the caution on lap two.

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Corey Knebel believes the pandemic-imposed hiatus will enable him to be ready for the start of the season as he returns from Tommy John surgery.

“I’m feeling very confident that I’ll be ready to go,” Knebel said after throwing an inning of scoreless relief in a Friday afternoon scrimmage.
