Four Milwaukee Brewer pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout to take down the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

Brandon Woodruff started for the Brewers, striking out 10 batters and surrendering just one walk and an infield hit over 6 1/3 innings. David Phelps, Devin Williams and Josh Hader combined for four more strikeouts over the final 2 2/3 innings to seal up the win.

Packers' Funchess says he's opting out of 2020 season

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Devin Funchess is opting out of playing this season in a move he calls one of the most difficult decisions he's ever made.

Funchess' choice leaves Green Bay without its only major offseason addition to their receiving group, one year after Davante Adams was the only Packer to catch as many as 50 passes or accumulate as many as 500 yards receiving.

No sharp-tailed grouse hunting season this fall

In light of scientific data and concerns over population viability, there will be no sharp-tailed grouse hunting season this fall. With no permits available, no applications will be made available or accepted this year.

WIAC among four conferences that alter sports seasons

Four conferences that include colleges from within the state announced changes to athletics July 27.

The biggest news came in the evening, when the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced it was canceling the conference seasons and championships for several fall sports — football, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s cross-country. It was also announced that women’s golf and women’s tennis competitions were moving from the fall to the spring.

Camps set to open after NFL, players’ union reach agreement

NFL training camps are set to open after the league and the players’ union reached agreement on several issues, including future salary cap mechanisms and how players can opt out of the upcoming season because of the coronavirus.

The NFL Players Association’s executive committee and 32 player representatives approved the offers Friday.

Anvelink and Schmuhl sweep Mid-Summer Classic

Based on the support by drivers and fans, it looks like the Mid-Summer Classic may become an annual event at the Shawano Speedway. With a rare Friday night show followed up with another show on Saturday night all while battling the summer heat, fans and drivers filled the stands and pits.

Opening night set a high bar when it came to action on the track, with multiple features providing exciting three-wide racing.

NBA-leading Bucks eager to recapture their pre-hiatus form

The Milwaukee Bucks believe they can build on the momentum they established while putting up the NBA’s best record before the pandemic-imposed hiatus — even if it has been months since they played a meaningful game.

Milwaukee is 53-12 and virtually assured of entering the postseason as the Eastern Conference’s top seed. The Bucks return from a 4 ½-month layoff July 31 when they face the Boston Celtics in Florida.

Packers expect no more than 10,000-12,000 fans at home games

Green Bay Packers CEO Mark Murphy says he expects the team’s home games this season will have no more than 10,000-12,000 fans, if spectators are allowed at all.

The Packers had announced two weeks ago that their 81,441-seat Lambeau Field would have a “significantly reduced” capacity this season due to the coronavirus pandemic. Murphy revealed Tuesday the magnitude of that reduction while expressing optimism a season would be played.

Pandemic can’t stop Uecker from 50th year in Brewers’ booth

Bob Uecker describes the most unique season of his half century as a Milwaukee Brewers’ broadcaster with the wit that has helped make him one of the game’s most recognizable voices.

“All of this stuff for me is totally new,” Uecker said Wednesday during a Zoom session with reporters. “What we’re doing here tonight, Zoom, I didn’t know what that was. That was some guy when I played who ran fast. I didn’t know anything about Zooming.”

WIAA sports set to return, but start dates amended

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control voted 8-3 to amend the start dates for fall sports at a special meeting on Thursday.

The sports that are considered lower risk — girls golf, girls tennis, girls swim and boys and girls cross-country — will begin practice Aug. 17 under the amendment. The higher risk sports — football, boys soccer and boys and girls volleyball — will have to wait until Sept. 7 to begin practice.
