The Wittenberg-Birnamwood softball team defeated Amherst 9-2.

Rory Salvesen was the leading hitter for Chargers, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs.

Ella Eichman pitched a complete game, giving up two runs and striking out eight with no walks.

Wausaukee 8, St. Thomas Aquinas/Lena 7

It came down to the seventh inning, as Wausaukee pulled out an 8-7 win over St. Thomas Aquinas/Lena.

Denmark 1, Oconto Falls 0

Denmark got revenge on Oconto Falls from the previous day’s loss to win 1-0.

Jack Adler was the best Panthers' hitter on the day, going 2-for-3 with a double.

Denmark’s Braedyn Heezen was 1-for-3 and was walked with the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Cole Bozile was the losing pitcher, working the last 2/3 of an inning, giving up three walks and one run.

Shawano doubles up on West De Pere

Shawano hitters enjoyed a nice day on the field, defeating West De Pere 6-3.

Marissa Tomashek hit 3-for-4 with two triples and a double. Ella Stuber was 1-for-3 and a pair of RBIs.

Abby Bystol hit 2-for-4, and Kimora O’Kimosh was 2-for-3. Braylyn Babino hit 1-for-4.

Kadence Meyers pitched seven innings, gave up six hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out six.

The application period for the 2024 elk hunt is open through May 31.

New this year, the Black River Elk Range will be open to hunting for the first time since elk were reintroduced to the state, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Once widespread, elk were eliminated from Wisconsin in the 1880s due to unregulated hunting and habitat loss.

Bonduel, Pulaski split separate DHs

Bonduel 6, Crivitz 1

Bonduel went 1-1 at a triangular event in Crivitz, first losing 6-4 to Freedom but then defeating their host 6-1.

Against Crivitz, Cade Johnson hit 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Kody Schroeder hit 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Noah Weier also hit a double. Also collecting RBIs were Charlie Tauchen and Colin Margelofsky.

Tauchen was the winning pitcher, giving up one run in six innings and striking out five.

Bonduel, Bowler/Gresham win both ends of DHs

Bonduel 9, Crivitz 2

Bonduel held a 9-0 lead against Crivitz before the host team scored twice in the bottom the seventh to give the Bears a 9-2 win.

Maddy Sokolski and Allison Zernicke each had two hits for the Bears. Jayla Reinke, Sokolski and Hailey Zernicke each a double, while Sokolski also had a triple. Joselyn Bohm, Lila Pleshek, Reinke, Sokolski (four), Hailey Zernicke and Allison Zernicke all had RBIs.

Tatum Sporisky was the winning pitcher.

Spring turkey season opens April 17

The 2024 spring turkey season opens April 17.

The season will run through May 28 and includes six, seven-day periods running Wednesday through the following Tuesday, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). All seven turkey management zones will be open for hunting.

The 2024 spring turkey season dates are as follows:

• Period A: April 17-23

• Period B: April 24-30

• Period C: May 1- 7

• Period D: May 8-14

• Period E: May 15-21

• Period F: May 22-28

Springborn gets first-ever feature win

The 2024 Shawano Speedway (powered by Auto Select) kicked off the season April 13 with hot racing action and cooler temps than one would like.

A total of 106 cars checked into the legendary half-mile to do battle, and fans witnessed a local driver pick up the first feature win of his career.

Gresham/Bowler girls win home invite

CATS Invitational

Gresham/Bowler girls won their home CATS Invitational while the boys finished second.

The girls scored 95 points, followed by Menominee Indian with 80, Marion with 46, Wolf River Lutheran with 36 and Faith Christian Academy with 30.

Menominee Indian won the boys meet with 162 points, followed by Gresham/Bowler with 46, Wolf River Lutheran with 41, Marion with 28 and Faith Christian Academy with 14.

Lena wins Bonduel golf invite

Bonduel Invite

Lena golfers earned the top score at the Bonduel Invite, carding a 327 to top the home team’s 348. Lena’s Braden McVane was the medalist with a 78.

Other teams and their scores were Wittenberg-Birnamwood 380, Amherst 384, Iola-Scandinavia 415, Oconto 416, Marion 423, Weyauwega-Fremont 434, Pacelli 454, Manawa 464, Shiocton 487 and Menominee Indian/Gresham 615.
