Volleyball: Gresham upended by Wabeno/Laona

BOWLER — The Gresham Community High School volleyball team was unable to solve Wabeno/Laona in a Division 4 sectional semifinal match on Thursday at Bowler High School.

The top-seeded Wildcats saw their magical season come to an end in a 25-12, 25-12, 25-15 loss to the second-seeded Rebels.

As she did throughout the season, Karisa Nietzer powered Gresham on the court, but Wabeno/Laona made the Wildcats work hard to earn every point and used several runs to pull away.

An overabundance of sports to cover

Over my year-and-a-half serving as the sports editor, I have had the privilege of covering several strong sports teams and a multitude of talented individuals.

The fall sports season, which will wrap up within the next couple weeks, presented the biggest challenge over that timeframe though, with an overabundance of teams and individuals to cover.

Coming into the fall season, I knew there would be some solid area football teams to keep an eye on, but I had no idea that I’d have Shawano, Bonduel, Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Marion/Tigerton all earn postseason berths.

Cross-Country: Bonduel teams ready for another state run

SHAWANO — Two local teams and three individual runners will put on their uniforms and lace up their shoes one last time this season to compete in the 2019 State Cross-Country Championships at Ridges Golf Course on Saturday.

Bonduel will send its boys and girls teams into the Division 3 races, while Shawano’s Demetrius Kaquatosh, Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Wyatt Dickman and Clintonville’s Jesse Wilson all run as individuals in the Division 2 boys race.

BOWLER — The Bowler High School volleyball team’s season came to an end after a regional title loss to Gresham on Saturday. That loss brought the end for a talented senior class that included Ireland DeRoos.

DeRoos helped the Panthers to a strong season on the court and to a No. 2 seed for the postseason.

In the team’s five-set regional semifinal win over Gillett on Thursday, DeRoos accumulated 11 digs and nine total kills. She posted seven total kills and five digs in a sweep of Marion in a regional quarterfinal match on Oct. 22.

SURING — The Suring High School football team had its season come to a close Friday after a tough loss to Gibraltar. Despite the loss, the Eagles enjoyed a memorable season at the 8-player level, with senior Jayden Geniesse playing a big role on both sides of the ball.

Geniesse served as the team’s quarterback, guiding a formidable offense that scored over 30 points in six games this fall.

Geniesse played cornerback on the defensive side of the ball and finished as the team leader in interceptions.

NFL: Rodgers, Jones star for Packers in victory over Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It was supposed to be a prime-time showdown between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs, division leaders each led by two of the most talented and exciting quarterbacks in the NFL.

Aaron Rodgers and the Packers lived up to the billing. Patrick Mahomes never got the chance.

Rodgers threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Aaron Jones on a big night for the Green Bay running back, and the Packers held off fill-in quarterback Matt Moore and the rest of the banged-up Chiefs for a 31-24 victory Sunday night.

College Football: Badgers trounced by Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — What was billed as a battle of the nation's top defenses turned into another rout for surging Ohio State.

The No. 3 Buckeyes' matchup with No. 13 Wisconsin was supposed to be the biggest challenge of the season for Ohio State, a test of mettle against a Badgers defense that statistically was ranked the best in the country.

Volleyball: Wildcats claim regional title

GRESHAM — The Gresham Community High School volleyball team crossed off another season goal on Saturday when it won a Division 4 regional title over Bowler.

The top-seeded Wildcats cruised to a 25-13, 25-13, 25-15 win over the second-seeded Panthers.

“It just shows all of our hard work that we put into the season, how much we’ve worked for it and that we deserve it,” said Gresham sophomore Valarie Cerveny on the regional title.

Gresham got out to big leads in the first and second sets before pulling away in a tight third set.

Top-seeded Gresham cruised to a Division 4 regional title win over second-seeded Bowler in Gresham on Saturday. The Wildcats won by scores of 25-13, 25-13, 25-15 and will now prepare for a sectional semifinal against second-seeded Wabeno/Laona on Thursday.

Karisa Nietzer totaled 19 kills, 14 service points and seven aces to lead Gresham in the win. Valarie Cerveny contributed 12 service points and 10 digs, while Hannah Cerveny had 15 assists.
