Girls Basketball: Witt-Birn chasing conference title

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls basketball team enters the new season with a talented roster and high aspirations.

The Chargers are coming off an up-and-down 2018-19 season in which they went 8-4 in Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division play. Witt-Birn, which is coached by Nick Mechelke, is healthy coming into the season and returns all but two players from last year’s team.

“The Chargers have high expectations this year as we are looking to compete for a conference championship,” said Mechelke, who expects the CWC-East to be strong again.

Volleyball: Nietzer, Wild earn CWC-North’s highest honors

GRESHAM — The Gresham Community High School volleyball team posted a perfect record to win the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division this fall. The team was honored in a big way, with senior Karisa Nietzer being named the conference’s Player of the Year and Tim Wild being tabbed the Coach of the Year.

“It means a lot to me. I’ve worked so hard and long for that achievement,” said Nietzer. “I went into every game thinking that I need to play hard no matter what, because in the end it would pay off.”

GREEN BAY — The Green Bay Packers defense stuffed a running play inside the 1-yard line as time expired to preserve a 24-16 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Down eight, Carolina put together a 18-play, 83-yard drive to try and tie up the game. Faced with a second-and-goal from the 2, the Panthers tried to run the ball with MVP candidate Christian McCaffrey, but the Packers kept the running back out of the end zone to improve to 8-2 overall.

GREEN BAY — Heading out to California for a week nine game against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Green Bay Packers appeared to be in cruise control after starting the year 7-1.

Things didn’t go according to plan from pretty much the opening kickoff, and the Packers were handed a humbling loss.

Luckily, it didn’t cost Green Bay its first place spot in the NFC North, but it turned week 10’s battle with the Carolina Panthers into a big contest, with the bye week looming in week 11.

No panic in Packer land

In the span of about three hours on Sunday, the Green Bay Packers went from Super Bowl contenders to a team shrouded in doubt.

At least that’s the outside perspective.

It’s true that the Packers performed miserably in a 26-11 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. It’s also true that good teams sometimes play bad games.

Cornerbacks Charles Woodson and Al Harris will form the Packers Hall of Fame’s 50th induction class. On April 18, the former teammates will become the 163rd and 164th players inducted.

In 2006, Woodson grudgingly agreed to a free-agent contract with the Packers only because nobody else wanted him. In seven dominant seasons, he intercepted 38 passes and broke up 115 and became an emotional leader. He was selected to four consecutive Pro Bowls from 2008 through 2011 — including NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2009 — and led the league in interceptions in 2009 and 2011.

College Football: Taylor's big day helps Badgers edge Iowa

MADISON — The best players close out games, and that's what Jonathan Taylor did Saturday night.

Taylor rushed for 130 of his season-high 250 yards in the fourth quarter, and Danny Davis ran for a touchdown and caught another as No. 16 Wisconsin outlasted No. 18 Iowa 24-22.

Taylor became the first running back this season to rush for more than 100 yards against Iowa as Wisconsin (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten, No. 13 College Football Playoff) held on to the Heartland Trophy, given each year to the winner of this game. The Badgers have beaten Iowa four straight times.

Girls Swim: Witt-Birn's Metropulos, relay team qualify for state

WISCONSIN RAPIDS — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls swim team qualified for state in two individual events and a relay while competing in the Division 2 Wisconsin Rapids Sectional on Saturday.

Junior McKenna Metropulos qualified for state after tying for second in the 50-yard freestyle (25.07 seconds) and taking third in the 100 butterfly (1:00.65).

Menominee Indian’s Uttecht signs letter of intent

KESHENA — Menominee Indian High School senior Riley Uttecht signed a letter of intent to continue his baseball career at Bay College in Escanaba, Michigan.

Uttecht signed his letter on Thursday in front of coaches, friends and family at the school.

“It’s a dream come true. Ever since I can remember, it’s been my dream to play college baseball,” said Uttecht. “I’m really excited to play.”
