Witt-Birn football team learns lessons in season-opening loss to Stratford

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School football team underwent a big early-season test on Friday when the team welcomed new Central Wisconsin Conference-Large Division foe Stratford to town.

Despite Stratford losing almost all of its starters from a team that made it to the Division 5 state title game in 2019, Witt-Birn knew a big challenge still awaited. The Chargers matched an early Tigers score, but couldn’t finish off any other drives during a 35-6 loss.

Oconto Falls ties for 4th at conference meet

Oconto Falls posted a team score of 393 to tie Marinette for fourth place at the North Eastern Conference Tournament on Wednesday at Wander Springs Golf Course in Greenleaf.

Kate Pytleski was the Panthers top golfer on the day, posting an 18-hole round of 93. Kaylee Sadowski was right behind Pytleski with a round of 94. Sadowski made the NEC honorable mention team for her play this conference season.

The Green Bay Packers placed G Lane Taylor on injured reserve and released LB Greg Roberts from the practice squad.

The transactions were announced Tuesday by Brian Gutekunst, the general manager of the Packers.

The Packers signed TE Nakia Griffin-Stewart to the practice squad.

Pack not satisfied on offense yet

Another week, another strong showing for the Green Bay Packers offense.

For a unit that didn’t make many upgrades over the offseason, they sure have been impressive during the first two weeks of the regular season.

In fact, through the first two weeks of the season, the Packers offense has accumulated the most total yards (1,010) in the entire league. Green Bay ranks sixth in passing yards (593) and first in rushing yards (417). The Packers have scored a league-leading 85 points, 12 more than the next best team.

Built differently

The Green Bay Packers are built for today and tomorrow. The New Orleans Saints are built for the here and now.

With time running out on 41-year-old quarterback Drew Brees and his quest to win a second Super Bowl championship, the Saints have assembled a win-now roster. That’s evident in several areas of roster construction.

Based on the NFL’s analysis of week one rosters, the Saints have a league-high 14 players who are 30 or older and have the oldest roster in the league at 27.00 years old.

Clintonville battled, but couldn't rally against North Eastern Conference opponent Oconto Falls on Saturday in Clintonville. Oconto Falls won by scores of 25-19, 25-15, 22-25, 25-21.

Josie Colla recorded 13 attack kills and five digs for Clintonville, while Autumn Steede posted 12 digs, 11 attack kills and three aces.

Gillett 0

Suring blanked Gillett in an 8-man clash on Friday in Suring. After a scoreless first quarter, Suring erupted for 30 second-quarter points.

Taron Haak rushed for a pair of touchdowns for Suring, while Jeremy Hensel added another rushing score. Gavin Fredenburgh led the way with 110 rushing yards, while Hensel had 84.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood couldn't keep pace with Stratford in a Central Wisconsin Conference-Large Division matchup on Friday in Wittenberg.

After Stratford scored the game's first points, Witt-Birn quickly answered, as wide receiver Kaden Schmidt got behind the Stratford defense and hauled in an 80-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ben Wesolowski.

Oconto Falls swept Denmark in a North Eastern Conference match Thursday in Oconto Falls. The Panthers won by scores of 25-23, 25-14, 25-19.

Hailey Peitersen recorded 23 assists, 15 digs and seven total kills for Oconto Falls, while Jayden Ardnt had 13 total kills. Emmie Magnin tallied six attack kills, while Laikyn St. Louis had five. Magnin also had five blocks.
