Athlete Profile: Emily Heling

The Shawano Community High School girls golf team has a chance to win the Bay Conference title this fall, and senior Emily Heling has played a big role in the team’s success to this point in the season.

The senior fired a nine-hole round of 51 to help the Hawks to a top finish in the first conference meet of the fall Aug. 20 at Shawano Lake Golf Course. Heling carded a round of 52 at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Seymour on Sept. 10 to again help the team to a first-place finish.

Heling has served as the team’s No. 2 golfer in its conference meets so far.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School’s Lauren Dombeck is enjoying her senior season of cross-country while also helping the team finish near the top of its Central Wisconsin Conference meets.

Dombeck placed 31st at the Charger Invitational on Aug. 8 in Wittenberg, a night the girls team placed third. The girls team also placed third at the T-Bird Invitational on Aug. 31 in Iola, with Dombeck finishing 35th that evening.

Hitters tend to steal the headlines when discussing volleyball teams, but without a solid setter, teams still struggle while on the attack. Emily Umentum functions as the setter for Gillett Secondary School’s volleyball team and is ready to turn in a solid senior season.

Umentum is coming off a junior season in which she was named to the Marinette & Oconto Conference honorable mention team. During conference play, Umentum tallied 134 assists.

Shawano's Jenna Ainsworth (No. 4 singles), Anna Cuenca and Grace Licausi (No. 1 doubles) and Adison Moesch and Morgan Van Eperen (No. 3 doubles) all scored in their setbacks.

Rodgers at ease as Packers roll past Vikings

After Green Bay won last season at Minnesota to clinch the division, Aaron Rodgers paused to take a video of some jubilant Packers fans still lingering in the stadium as he walked to the bus.

This victory over the Vikings was just as memorable, albeit barely audible.

Rodgers took full advantage of the young cornerbacks and the empty building in Minnesota, beginning his 13th season as Green Bay's starting quarterback by passing for 364 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Packers past the Vikings 43-34 on Sunday.

Falls' Ludemann, Adams third at triangular

Oconto Falls' Hannah Ludemann and Joe Adams each placed third during a triangular on Friday in Oconto Falls. Ludemann completed the course in 22 minutes, 42 seconds, while Adams posted a time of 17:40.

The Oconto Falls boys took second with a score of 45, behind Little Chute (18). The Oconto Falls girls finished third with a score of 51, behind Marinette (34) and Little Chute (39).

Collared deer legal to harvest during fall deer seasons

During the 2020 hunting season, hunters may spot deer that are equipped with radio collars. Collared deer are part of a mortality study by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and they are legal to hunt with a standard Wisconsin hunting license and harvest authorization.

After wild offseason, Pack eager to play

One of the strangest NFL offseasons has come to an end, and now it’s finally time to play some football.

The Green Bay Packers, who will travel to take on the Minnesota Vikings in week one, head into the 2020 season coming off their best season in a few years. But they seem to have more questions to answer than reasons for optimism.
