Suring volleyball team unable to get rolling in regional title game

The second-seeded Suring High School volleyball team started slow and couldn’t recover in a Division 4 regional title game against the top-seeded Green Bay NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy co-op on Saturday in Green Bay.

The co-op won by scores of 25-5, 25-9, 25-11.

“They served well. They passed well. They swing well. They are just a quality team,” said Suring coach Tonia Kruschke of the co-op.

Gillett girls team, Hanson, Peterson qualify for state cross-country meet

The Gillett Secondary School girls cross-country team and a pair of boys runners qualified for state after competing in the Division 3 Manitowoc Lutheran Sectional on Saturday.

The Gillett girls won a competitive race with a team score of 44, edging Sevastopol and Lourdes Academy (46 each). Sylvia Hansen, Carleigh Kaczmarek, Ryann Wagner, Angela Mosconi, Megan Wagner, Laney DeBauch and Alaina Herzog formed Gillett's team.

Witt-Birn, Bonduel, Oconto Falls, Clintonville unable to qualify any runners for state cross-country meet

Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Bonduel, Oconto Falls and Clintonville all had runners compete at the Division 2 Tomahawk Sectional on Saturday, but no teams or runners qualified for state.

The Witt-Birn boys competed as a team, taking fourth with a team score of 102. Freedom (31) and Little Chute (33) earned the state team spots after taking first and second.

Tommy Bruski led the way with an 18th-place finish in 17 minutes, 30.6 seconds. Simon Schairer came in 25th in 18:01.9.

Mertz dazzles as No. 14 Wisconsin routs Illinois

Graham Mertz threw five touchdown passes to match the Wisconsin record in a commanding first career start and the No. 14 Badgers beat Illinois 45-7 on Friday night to open the pandemic-delayed Big Ten football season.

Mertz set a school record for completion percentage on 20-of-21 passing, finishing with 248 yards. The lone incompletion was a pass that running back Garret Groshek dropped midway through the third quarter.

Oconto Falls blanked Crandon in a Northwoods Conference matchup on Friday in Crandon.

With the win, the Panthers improved to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Shawano scored 45-plus points for a second-straight game and eased to a Bay Conference win over Waupaca on Friday in Shawano.

Shawano is now 4-1 overall and 3-1 in Bay play.

Bonduel 37

Oconto 14

Bonduel rolled to a Packerland Conference victory over Oconto on Friday in Bonduel.

Bonduel is now 4-1 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in conference play.

Oconto Falls volleyball team runs out of gas in playoff match vs. Peshtigo

Having to work extremely hard to earn every point, the second-seeded Oconto Falls High School volleyball team eventually ran out of gas in a Division 2 playoff match against third-seeded Peshtigo on Thursday in Oconto Falls.

Peshtigo ended up winning by scores of 15-25, 25-19, 24-26, 25-16, 15-8.

Shawano's Chelberg takes 29th at cross-country sectional

Shawano Community High School freshman cross-country runner Grace Chelberg placed 29th at the Division 1 Hortonville Sectional on Friday.

Chelberg completed the course in 21 minutes, 37.1 seconds. The freshman came up short of qualifying for state.

The individual runners that advanced to state placed inside the top 12. Kaukauna and Kimberly placed first and second, respectively to qualify for state as teams.

Green Bay believes it will bounce back quickly

The Green Bay Packers strong start to the regular season came to a screeching halt on Sunday when the team was dismantled by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed just 16 of his 35 passes, was picked off twice, got sacked four times and was hit several other times.

The Packers running tandem of Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams was limited to 49 yards on 14 carries, with 25 of those yards coming on one carry.
