Menominee Indian wrestling team hoping for improvement from returning talent

The Menominee Indian High School wrestling team returns a solid core of wrestlers this winter, which gives coach Kirk Bahr plenty of reason for optimism as the year starts up.

Menominee Indian finished ninth at the Central Wisconsin Conference Tournament last season, but has nearly every wrestler from that team back and are now hoping experience leads to more success.

Junior Asenex Turney was the team’s top performer at conference, placing third in the 285-pound weight class. He went on to qualify for sectionals.

Shawano boys basketball team needs returning players to step up

The Shawano Community High School boys basketball believes it can still piece together a strong season this winter despite losing some of the key cogs to last year’s team.

The Hawks went 12-11 last season, finishing in the middle of the Bay Conference with a 6-8 record. This year’s team will need to replace Carter Weisnicht and Nick Sherman, who were the team’s all-conference selections and combined to average over 40 points a game.

Bowler boys basketball team expecting more competitive season

Coming off a down 2019-20 season, the Bowler High School boys basketball team is expecting a better season this winter behind an experienced core of returning players.

The Panthers finished 4-19 last season, going 2-10 in Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division play. Coach Ted Kietlinski will have to replace the lone all-conference player from that team, but returns several other experienced players and anticipates a more competitive team as a result.

Seniors Lane Schultz, Logan Thiex and Adin Brei and junior Wylee Dodge are all back and have started in the past.

Lena boys basketball team hoping experience leads to improvement

A more experienced Lena High School boys basketball team is hoping for better results on the court this winter.

Lena finished just 1-22 last season, going 1-15 in the Marinette & Oconto Conference. While coach Fritz Weidner will need to replace a player that graduated, he does return a group of players that will try and use their experience as a strength this winter.

Marion boys basketball team reloading roster

The Marion High School boys basketball team will need several new varsity players to step up this winter after graduating most of the players that made up last year’s team.

Marion posted a 7-16 record during the 2019-20 season, including a 5-7 march through the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division.

Marion does return Branden Beechy, who landed on the all-conference second team last year as a junior. Beechy led the team by scoring over 11 points per game, and averaged over five rebounds.

Packers blow 14-point halftime lead in loss to Colts

The Indianapolis defense may have turned Aaron Rodgers into a believer Sunday.

Everyone else might want to take notice, too.

After allowing three touchdown passes and 28 first-half points, the Colts gave up only three second-half points. They also forced a game-changing fumble less than a minute into overtime for a 34-31 victory over Green Bay.

Rodrigo Blankenship won it with a 39-yard field goal with 7:10 remaining.

Shawano football team caps strong season with convincing win

The Shawano Community High School football team capped an strong season with a 46-14 victory over Seymour in a Division 2 playoff game Thursday in Shawano.

The Shawano trio of seniors Gage Timm and Kaleb Lowney and junior Elliott Lowney accounted for all of the host’s points to help the team finish off a 6-3 season.

“Like coach (Alan Tomow) said, two years ago we were 1-8 and we knew we had to build off of that. Being able to win the first playoff games in school history, that’s something special,” said Kaleb Lowney.

Seymour 14

Shawano dominated Seymour in a Division 2 playoff game Thursday in Shawano.

Elliott Lowney, Gage Timm and Kaleb Lowney accounted for all six Shawano touchdowns on the night. Elliott Lowney caught two touchdown passes from Timm, who also rushed for a touchdown.

Elliott Lowney returned an interception for another score. Kaleb Lowney finished with a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Bigelow gearing up for fishing championship

After a strong first year as a professional fisherman, Shawano Community High School graduate Jacob Bigelow is preparing to take part in the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Toyota Series Championship that includes a $200,000 prize for the winner.

The championship is being held from Dec. 3-5 on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky.

“My expectations are pretty high,” said Bigelow. “I always hold myself to a very high standard, and with this tournament I will be holding myself to an even higher one.

Nine-day gun deer season begins Saturday
