Deer are powerful animals, and their will to live sometimes seems to defy the laws of nature and physics.

Most of us veteran deer hunters have seen fatally shot deer run 100 yards or even more. These animals are literally dead on their feet, but still they move. And this instinctive survival mode creates two problems.

GREEN BAY — The Green Bay Packers are in.

After completing the regular-season sweep of the longtime-rival Chicago Bears and having the Dallas Cowboys make easy work of the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, the Packers clinched a playoff berth.

It’s the first time in three years that Green Bay (11-3) will play postseason football.

Lena 21

Gillett cruised to a Marinette & Oconto Conference victory over Lena on Friday in Gillett.

Aubrey DeBauch and Karissa Schaal powered Gillett on offense, scoring 26 and 19 points, respectively.

Ryann Wagner added eight points for the Tigers, while Brianna DeBauch and Alaina Herzog had six each. A total of nine Gillett players scored in the win.

Brianna Spratlin was Lena's top scorer with six points.

Gillett took down Wabeno/Laona in a nonconference battle on Thursday in Gillett.

Aubrey DeBauch led Gillett with 12 points, while Sydney Young added eight.

Karissa Schaal, Camryn Long and Macy Franti scored six points each for the Tigers.

Luxemburg-Casco 41

Clintonville picked up a North Eastern Conference victory over Luxemburg-Casco on Thursday in Clintonville.

Erin Viergutz scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Clintonville on the court. Selina Torrez contributed 12 points, while Jordan Lehman had 10 and Elly Arndt nine.

BONDUEL — The Bonduel High School boys basketball team needed a player to step up and carry the scoring load for the winter season. Enter Cole Letter.

The senior has been a nightmare for opposing teams to defend, as he’s scored over 20 points in all but one game this season. Letter has scored over 30 points two times — against Weyauwega-Fremont (34) and Green Bay West (31). His 34-point game was his career-high point total as of Wednesday.

Letter has hit three or more 3-pointers in four of Bonduel’s five games and gets to the free throw line several times per game.

College Volleyball: Wisconsin tops Baylor to reach title game

PITTSBURGH — Dana Rettke had 17 kills, Molly Haggerty added 14 and Wisconsin beat Baylor 25-27, 25-21, 25-17, 25-19 on Thursday night to advance to the NCAA women's volleyball championship match.

Seeking their first title, the Badgers will face the winner of the second semifinal between Stanford and Minnesota.

Rettke also had eight blocks, and Tiffany Clark added 18 digs for Wisconsin (27-6). The Badgers are 3-0 in national semifinals, also winning in 2000 and 2013 before falling in the finals both times.

Girls Basketball: Gillett falls to Bonduel on road

BONDUEL — The Gillett High School girls basketball team battled until the final whistle, but was unable to overcome an early deficit in a nonconference loss to Bonduel on Tuesday. The hosting Bears won 56-44.

Gillett got off to a solid start when junior Aubrey DeBauch and senior Camryn Long each converted shots to put the team up 4-2. Bonduel answered with a couple 3-pointers and two other 2-point shots to grab a 12-4 lead and force a Tigers’ timeout.

Girls Basketball: Troxel, Robaidek lead Bonduel to win

BONDUEL — The duo of Kara Troxel and Allaina Robaidek had a monster first half to help the Bonduel High School girls basketball team out to a comfortable lead. Bonduel then hung on down the stretch to claim a 56-44 nonconference win over Gillett on Tuesday.

After Gillett scored four of the game’s first six points, Robaidek, a sophomore, and Troxel, a junior, helped Bonduel take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish again.

Aubrey DeBauch and Karissa Schaal powered Gillett on offense, scoring 18 and 15 points, respectively. DeBauch scored 12 of the Tigers’ 23 first-half points.
