Wittenberg-Birnamwood escaped with a Central Wisconsin Conference crossover win against Rosholt on Monday in Rosholt.

Reese Rogowski and Emma Herb each scored 11 points to lead Witt-Birn. Jadalynn Davids and Kaylee Schram each added 10 points.

Herb also had 12 rebounds, three steals and three assists on the night. Schram grabbed 10 rebounds, while Amara Schoepke had seven. Rogowski tallied three steals.

Gillett’s Hansen, Hanson sign letters of intent

Gillett Secondary School seniors Sylvia Hansen and Derek Hanson signed letters of intent to continue their running careers in front of family, teammates, friends and coaches on Monday in the school’s auditorium.

Hansen will continue her running career at Winona State University, while Hanson runs for Minnesota State University Moorhead. Both schools compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NCAA Division II).

Both runners plan to compete in both cross-country and track and field while in college.

The Shawano Community High School girls basketball team is hoping for a better season with each player from last year’s team back in the mix.

So far, the Hawks are off to a strong start, with senior Rachel Reed serving as a consistent scorer during the team’s 3-0 start.

Shawano opened the winter season hosting nonconference opponent Gillett on Nov. 24. Reed scored a team-leading 22 points for the Hawks in their 59-43 win.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School wrestling team seems to churn out state qualifiers on a yearly basis. Last year, Wyatt Esker was one of two Chargers to make it to state, and the senior is hoping to make it back again this season.

Before qualifying for state last season, Esker won the 145-pound weight class at the Central Wisconsin Conference Tournament. He then took first in the weight class at the Waupaca Regional before claiming second at the Oconto Falls Sectional.

Athlete Profile: Aidan Stary

The Oconto Falls High School wrestling team has high aspirations heading into the winter season behind a talented group of returning wrestlers. Senior Aidan Stary is among that group after he qualified for state last season.

To make it to state, Stary first earned a second-place finish in the 160-pound weight class at the Oconto Falls regional. He then won three matches during the Oconto Falls sectional to finish third in his weight class and qualify for state.

Stary dropped his lone decision at state and finished his junior season with a 28-19 record.

Brewers promote Matt Arnold to senior VP and general manager

The Milwaukee Brewers have promoted Matt Arnold to senior vice president and general manager.

Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns announced the move Nov. 19 and said it “formalizes how we have operated over the last few years.” Stearns previously held the title president of baseball operations and general manager.

Injured Packers DL Montravius Adams likely out for season

Green Bay Packers reserve defensive lineman Montravius Adams is expected to miss the rest of the season because of a toe injury.

The Packers placed Adams on injured reserve Wednesday, a move that requires him to sit out at least three games. Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Thursday he doesn’t expect Adams to return this season.

“It doesn’t bode well for ‘Mon’ being able to come back,” LaFleur said. “Again, he’s a guy that’s battled through it, and I just think it’s going to be one of those where we’re probably going to have to shut him down.”

Shawano girls basketball team wins Cranberry Classic

The Shawano Community High School girls basketball team won the Cranberry Classic in Wisconsin Rapids after posting a 2-0 record in the two-day tournament.

Shawano opened tournament play with a 59-51 victory over Assumption on Friday. Brianna Wright posted 19 points to lead the Hawks to victory, with Rachel Reed and Lydia Beyer providing 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Shawano then downed Columbus Catholic 56-44 on Saturday. Avery Dreier scored 16 points to pace the Hawks, while Reed added 15 points.

Packers dismantle Bears to grab commanding lead in division

The Green Bay Packers dominated the Chicago Bears on Sunday night in front of a small crowd at Lambeau Field, working out to a 31-point lead before coasting to a 41-25 win.

The Packers offense was nearly unstoppable, scoring touchdowns on five of its first seven possessions, and the defense had three takeaways and scored a touchdown of its own.

Lambeau Field to evaluate COVID-19 protocols at Packers, Bears game

While Lambeau Field is still closed on gamedays to ticketed fans, Sunday’s game between the Packers and the Bears will host a small group of Packers employees and their household family in the stadium bowl to help evaluate COVID-19 protocols that have been implemented.
