The Green Bay Packers activated LB Kamal Martin and RB Jamaal Williams from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The transactions were announced Monday by General Manager Brian Gutekunst.

Per agreed-upon NFL-NFLPA policy, clubs are not permitted to comment on a player’s medical status other than referring to roster status. Being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list is for a player who either tests positive for COVID-19 or who has been in close contact with an infected person or persons.

Brewers’ Williams named NL Rookie of the Year

Right-handed reliever Devin Williams was voted 2020 National League Rookie of the Year, edging Phillies infielder Alec Bohm and Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth.

The announcement was made Monday by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Williams becomes the third player in franchise history to earn Rookie of the Year honors, joining shortstop Pat Listach (1992) and third baseman Ryan Braun (2007).

Green Bay weathers first coronavirus scare

The 2020 National Football League season is a completely different animal than past seasons.

Teams are not only preparing every week to take down the next opponent on their schedules, but also trying to keep the coronavirus out of their building.

The Green Bay Packers have done a solid job on both tasks so far, but the last couple of weeks have provided a little more adversity.

Adams chasing history

Across the street from Lambeau Field stands the Don Hutson Center, the Green Bay Packers’ indoor practice facility. The building honors one of the great players in NFL history, the legendary receiver who helped revolutionize the NFL.

In the 11-game 1942 season, Hutson caught 74 passes for 1,211 yards and 17 touchdowns. Almost 80 years later, Hutson’s 110.1 receiving yards per game stands as the best in franchise history. From James Lofton and Sterling Sharpe, to Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson, that mark has scarcely been tested.

Clintonville girls basketball team looking to continue success with new cast

Coming off a strong 2019-20 season, the Clintonville High School girls basketball team will need some new players to step up in order to enjoy another successful season this winter.

Clintonville posted a 16-8 overall record last year, going 12-6 in North Eastern Conference play to place fourth. The Truckers earned a playoff win before dropping a road game in overtime to Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Both of the team’s all-conference selections from last fall have since graduated, so the opportunity to lead the team is now up for grabs.

Witt-Birn girls basketball team dealing with adversity as season starts up

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls basketball heads into the 2020-21 season hoping to repeat as Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division champions, but needing to replace some key players from last year’s squad to accomplish that.

Witt-Birn graduated two players from the team that finished 22-2 overall and 11-1 in conference play last winter. The Chargers will also be without senior Abi Fraaza when play begins— possibly for the entire season — after she underwent meniscus reconstruction surgery after an injury during the fall sports season.

Oconto Falls girls basketball team optimistic under new coach

The Oconto Falls High School girls basketball team enters the winter season with some questions to answer.

The Panthers are coming off a strong 16-7 season last winter, which included a third-place finish in the North Eastern Conference with a 13-5 record. The team graduated three seniors from that team and will also be under the direction of a new coach, Tim Solarek.

Still, the team has high goals set.

Experienced Shawano girls basketball roster hoping for improvement

The Shawano Community High School girls basketball team heads into the winter season with an experienced roster and hoping to improve on last year’s showing.

The Hawks, who are coached by Ryan Koenig, posted an 8-16 overall record last winter, going 4-10 in the Bay Conference. Shawano won a home playoff game before losing to New London in a regional semifinal.

The team didn’t graduate any players from last year’s team, so this year’s roster believes that should serve as a strength.

Instructors say DNR decision to waive field tests creates unsafe hunters afield

Some hunter safety volunteer instructors around the state are angry that the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources eliminated the need for students under age 18 to take a field course before getting certification to hunt on their own.

This means that thousands of young, first-time hunters could take to the deer woods this fall with no practical experience and no field testing. This hands-on testing often weeds out up to 10% of unsafe students who are putting their finger on the trigger or sweeping a rifle barrel at someone, longtime instructors say.
