Gillett 18

Gillett dropped a Marinette & Oconto Conference matchup against Coleman on Jan. 12 in Gillett.

Aydin Franti was the only Gillett player to score over three points, tallying 10. He knocked down two 3-pointers and four free throws.

BOYS HOCKEY

Shawano co-op 10

Tomahawk 4

The Shawano/Bonduel/Clintonville co-op cruised to a win over Tomahawk on Jan. 12 at the Crawford Center in Shawano. Seven different co-op players scored.

Andrew Puissant led the co-op with three goals and an assist. Ryan Wegenke added two goals.

Gene Lasch a candidate for Packers FAN Hall of Fame

Shawano resident Gene Lasch is among the 10 finalists for the Green Bay Packers FAN Hall of Fame.

Lasch, 86, was honored to be among the 10 top fans this year, saying he “felt like a Packer player who just won the Super Bowl.” To describe it in a word, he used “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” because there wasn’t another word that described how he felt.

Lasch, a Korean war veteran, has a number of memorable moments involving the Packers.

Crivitz 40

Shawano toppled Crivitz in a nonconference clash on Jan. 11 in Shawano.

Ethan Schwitzer led a balanced Shawano attack with 17 points. Jacob Landon had 15 points, while Brandon Reed scored 13.

Elliott Lowney and Kaleb Lowney were the other two Hawks that scored in the contest, posting eight and six points, respectively.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Suring 49

Niagara 39

Suring topped Niagara in a Marinette & Oconto Conference clash on Jan. 11 in Niagara.

Kate Mahoney scored 15 points to lead Suring on the offensive end. She knocked down five 3-pointers. Kylee Stelzer contributed 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Eagles.

Kelsey Smith recorded 15 rebounds and seven points for Suring. Christine Sleeter grabbed 13 rebounds and had two blocks.

Athlete Profile: Wyatt Brandt

The Shawano Community High School wrestling team is seeking its third consecutive Bay Conference title this season. Senior Wyatt Brandt is one of the wrestlers leading the charge.

Through Jan. 10, Brandt had a 4-1 record on the season. Two of the wins were by pin, while another was by technical fall.

Brandt was an honorable mention at the 132-pound weight class in the latest Division 1 rankings released by wiwrestling.com.

Brandt advanced to sectionals as a junior and was one win shy of qualifying for state.

Athlete Profile: Braden Uelmen

It’s been a tough season so far for the Oconto Falls High School boys basketball team. The team hadn’t earned a win as of Jan. 10 but has been putting together more competitive showings in recent games. A consistent for the Panthers this season has been the play of senior Braden Uelmen.

Uelmen is averaging over 13 points a game this winter. He’s tallied over 13 points in each of the team’s past five contests.

During a 69-60 loss to Marinette on Jan. 5, Uelmen scored 22 points. He also scored 22 points during a 65-64 loss to Waupaca on Jan. 7.

Athlete Profile: Justin Knaup

A season ago, the Tigerton High School boys basketball team won just two games. As of Jan. 10, the Tigers already had two wins this season, with plenty of time to surpass last year’s win total. The play of senior Justin Knaup is part of the reason why the team is making positive strides.

Knaup is averaging 7.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game this season.

College Highlights (Jan. 8)

Oakland City

Bowler High School graduate Reanne Kietlinski is averaging 16.1 minutes played per game for the Oakland City (Indiana) women’s basketball team this winter. Through Jan. 6, Kietlinski had played in all nine of the team’s games.

In the team’s most recent game, a 75-71 loss to Ohio Christian, Kietlinski started and recorded nine points, two steals, two rebounds and an assist across 30 minutes. She played 28 minutes during the team’s 78-55 loss to Grace (Indiana) on Dec. 31, tallying 10 points, two rebounds and two assists.
