Lena 1

Gillett rallied past Lena in a Marinette & Oconto Conference match in Gillett on Tuesday. The Tigers won by scores of 22-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-8.

Karissa Schaal led Gillett with eight attack kills, while Grace Wickman had six. Sophie Horsens contributed 11 assists, three kills and six digs, while Emily Umentum had 13 assists and six aces.

Bonduel eased to a Central Wisconsin Conference crossover home win over Tigerton on Tuesday, winning by scores of 25-5, 25-13, 25-15.

Megan Zeitler got the Bears off to a strong start, serving while the hosts claimed 15 straight points in the first set. She finished the night with 20 service points, six attack kills, five digs and three aces.

Cross-Country: Shawano’s Arce, White place first at invitational

WITTENBERG — Shawano Community High School’s Odessa Arce and Alec White each placed first as individuals to lead their cross-country teams to strong finishes at the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers Invitational on Tuesday.

Arce, a sophomore, won the girls race with a time of 21 minutes, 26.65 seconds. The Shawano girls placed first with a score of 49.

White, a freshman, claimed the top time (18:06.02) in the boys race to help Shawano take second with a score of 71. Witt-Birn (59) took first.

Girls Tennis: Shawano eases past Green Bay West

SHAWANO — The Shawano Community High School girls tennis team knocked off Bay Conference opponent Green Bay West 7-0 in the team’s home-opening match on Tuesday.

Isabella Buettner (No. 1), Peyton Buerman (No. 2), Rylie Anderson (No. 3) and Jillian Black (No. 4) all earned wins in singles action for the Hawks.

Lydia Dobberstein and Grace Licausi teamed up for a strong victory in No. 1 doubles play. The teams of Chloe Krueger and Haley Williams (No. 2) and Alana Krolow and Aubree Zastrow (No. 3) earned forfeit wins.

SURING — The Suring High School football team got its fall season off to a 2-0 start, thanks in large part to the play of senior Logan Stuart.

In a season-opening game, which was the team’s first at the 8-man level of play, Stuart led the Eagles to a win over Sevastopol, the reigning state champions. The senior finished with 341 rushing yards and five touchdowns (on runs of 44, 10, 2, 20 and 38 yards).

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School football team had lofty expectations heading into the season, and behind senior leader Logan Balliett, the team is off to a 2-1 start.

Balliett, who is the team’s quarterback while playing safety on defense, guided the team to a 34-0 victory over Northland Pines in week one. He tossed a touchdown to Simon Stewart for one of the team’s five scores.

MLB: Brewers' Yelich out for regular season with broken kneecap

MIAMI — Milwaukee Brewers star Christian Yelich broke his right kneecap on a foul ball Tuesday night and will miss the rest of the regular season.

The Brewers didn't say whether the reigning NL MVP might be able to return for the playoffs that begin Oct. 1 if they make it that far. Milwaukee began the day two games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot.

Yelich fouled a ball off his right leg in the first inning against Miami. He was down on the ground for several minutes before limping off the field.

Volleyball: Hawks drops back-and-forth match to Clippers

SHAWANO — The Shawano Community High School volleyball team battled in a back-and-forth nonconference match against Sturgeon Bay on Monday but came up on the wrong end of a 22-25, 25-17, 26-24, 23-25, 15-9 final in five sets.

Shawano showed flashes of surging past Sturgeon Bay all night but was plagued by inconsistency, especially with its serve receive.

Girls Golf: Hawks place third at invite

OCONTO FALLS — The Shawano Community High School girls golf team continued its strong fall season with a third-place finish at the Oconto Falls Invite on Monday at River Island Golf Course.

The Hawks turned in a team score of 421, trailing only Wrightstown (405) and Marinette (392).

Taylor Johnson led the way for Shawano, posting an 18-hole round of 97 to take third as an individual. She fired a 46 on the front nine.

Emily Heling finished second on the team, carding a 105.
