Hawks fall short against New London

Shawano’s tennis team lost a closely contested match to New London at home. The Hawks fought back to force three tiebreakers but fell short in the end, losing 4-3.

Winning for the Hawks were Rachel Carroll at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-0; Jaelyn Hietpas at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-1; and Ava Hoffman at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-1.

In one of the tiebreakers, No. 1 singles player Ireland Setterman lost 6-4, 0-6, 7-10.

Bonduel boys win at Colby

Colby/Abbotsford Invitational

Bonduel’s boys won the invite at Colby scoring 35 points, 19 better than second-place Columbus Catholic’s 54.

Five Bonduel runners captured spots seven through 11.

Race Anvelink led the Bears, placing seventh in 18:21.91. He was followed by: Oliver Chitwood, eighth, 18:37.54; Griffin Uelmen, ninth, 18:45.51; Gage Anderson, 10th, 18:48.28; and Joah Dworniczak, 11th, 19:06.46.

Garrett Anderson finished 27th in 20:47.20, and Ben Reisner was 37th in 21:38.48.

Marshfield Tiger Invite

Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s girls cross-country team won first place in the small division and second place overall at the Marshfield Tiger Invite. The girls scored 90 points.

The boys team was 12th with 332 points.

Rory Salvesen led the girls with a second-place finish in 20:38.

Nora Bushman placed seventh in 21:10, while Harper Krull was ninth in 21:22.

Gabrielle Timm was 30th in 23:19, and Jayden Zeinert finished 50th in 24:36.

Shawano shuts out Green Bay East

Shawano 2, Green Bay East o

Warner Beyer scored both of Shawano’s goals as he led the young Hawks to another victory, this one a 2-0 Bay Conference opener.

Ryan Buerman and the defense were also brilliant in another shutout victory while the middle of the field was controlled but with some stellar midfield play.

The Hawks improved to 4-1-1 overall and are 1-0 in conference play.

Pulaski 3, Wausau East 1

The Red Raiders took down the host Lumberjacks with a 3-1 victory.

Pulaski tennis team tops Manitowoc Lincoln

Pulaski 5, Manitowoc Lincoln 2

Pulaski rolled over Manitowoc Lincoln, winning three singles and two doubles matches for a 5-2 victory.

Aubrie Schluessler won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Isabella Skalecki captured the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-1, and Anna Krause won t No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-4.

Ruth Krause lost in a heartbreaking three-set match 3-6, 7-6 (5), 11-9 at No. 1 singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Alyssa Eggert and Addison Heezen lost 6-1, 6-3.

Lena battles back for win against Niagara

Lena 3, Niagara 1

A 25-19 loss to Niagara in the first game didn’t get Lena down, as the Wildcats fought back to win the next three games 25-18, 25-21, 25-18 for a 3-1 win.

Bonduel 3, Shiocton 2

Bonduel volleyball earned its first conference win against Shiocton. The game went to five sets.

Shiocton jumped out to the early lead, winning the first set 25-22. Bonduel then won the next two sets 25-16 and 25-19.

Fox River Classic Conference Mini-Meet #4

The Red Raiders scored a 203 and placed sixth at Thornberry Creek. Bay Port won the mini meet with a 168.

Pulaski scores were a 48, 49, 52 and 54. There were also scores of 57 and 65.

Sept. 10

Bay Conference Mini-Meet #6

Shawano golfers were two stokes off the lead and placed second at Crystal Springs Golf Course. The Hawks had a 190 compared to Seymour’s winning 188.

Bonduel placed sixth with a 234.

Bear hunting season open

The 2024 bear hunting season opened Sept. 4. With diligent scouting and preparation efforts, bear hunters should expect another year of quality bear hunting this fall.

DNR publishes fall 2024 hunting, trapping forecasts

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released the 2024 fall forecast series, detailing the hunting outlook for a variety of popular game species.

These forecasts outline what hunters and trappers across the state can expect while pursuing their favorite game species. In addition to information about specific game species, they also include reminders about public land access opportunities, game registration requirements and season dates.

Safe riding is a year-round activity

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) urges ATV/UTV enthusiasts to always recreate responsibly when hitting the trails. That means staying on designated routes, wearing a helmet and seat belt and keeping their speed in check.

So far this year, 22 people have been killed in ATV/UTV crashes. Most of them were not wearing seat belts or helmets, and alcohol and speed were also noted as contributing factors.
