Fifth-seeded Shawano upset fourth-seeded Mosinee in a Division 3 regional semifinal in Mosinee on Thursday.

Michael Klement scored two goals and was credited with an assist to lead Shawano. Chris Etori and Owen Moesch each added a goal, while Lance Huebner had an assist.

JJ Pyatskowit made seven saves while defending the net for the Hawks.

Shawano will play at top-seeded Waupaca in a regional final on Saturday.

Girls Swim: Clintonville’s Foth earns top finish at sprints meet

SHAWANO — Clintonville’s Brianna Foth earned a first-place finish, while Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Shawano/Bonduel each placed in the top five as teams at the 19th Annual Hawks Sprint Invite on Tuesday.

Foth, a junior, came in first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.72 seconds.

Volleyball: Clintonville pulls off upset over Shawano

SHAWANO — The 10th-seeded Clintonville High School volleyball team upset seventh-seeded Shawano in a Division 2 regional quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, winning by scores of 25-12, 13-25, 25-20, 25-23.

“I think all the things we’ve been working on all season, we just really brought it together tonight. We had all the confidence in each other and in our team. This is what we’ve been working for and we knew we could do it,” said Clintonville senior Lindsy Carpenter.

Eighth-seeded Oconto Falls defended its home court in a Division 2 regional quarterfinal match against ninth-seeded Wrightstown on Tuesday. The Panthers won by scores of 25-20, 25-21, 25-27, 25-18.

Oconto Falls will travel to take on top-seeded Luxemburg-Casco on Thursday in a regional semifinal.

OCONTO FALLS — The Oconto Falls High School football team has played in numerous tight games over the past couple seasons, but the wins have eluded the Panthers. Joey Walters capped his high school career by helping the team win its final two games of the season.

In a run-first offense, Walters’ passing opportunities are usually few and far between. The senior made the most of his three completions in a 26-13 win over Clintonville on Friday, throwing for 154 yards and a touchdown. He also intercepted a pass during the contest.

College Football: Wisconsin stunned by Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The plan was for Wisconsin to roll into a showdown with Ohio State next week unbeaten, with a defense putting up historic numbers and a Heisman Trophy contender at running back.

Illinois had other plans.

James McCourt kicked a 39-yard field as time expired and the Illini pulled off the biggest upset of the college football season, knocking off No. 6 Wisconsin 24-23 on Saturday.

Football: Witt-Birn comes up short against Manawa

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School football team ended the regular season hosting Manawa, hoping to bounce back from a tough road loss. Instead, Manawa came up with a big fourth quarter to defeat the Chargers 28-15 in a Central Wisconsin Conference-Large Division matchup, spoiling Witt-Birn’s homecoming.

“Mental and physical errors are what cost us the game, we played a good team and got beat by a good team,” Witt-Birn coach Bernard Holsey said. “We will come back next week and learn from our mistakes in order to get ready for playoffs.”

Cross-Country: Clintonville’s Wilson wins NEC title again

FREEDOM — Clintonville High School sophomore Jesse Wilson placed first at the North Eastern Conference Championships on Saturday at Irish Waters Golf Course.

Wilson also won the conference title last year as a freshman. He finished the course in 16 minutes, 48.52 seconds on Saturday after claiming the top spot in 2018 with a time of 16:49.64.

Wilson was battling a pair of Freedom runners for the top spot the entire race. The sophomore was able to overcome a late deficit for the first-place finish.
