Oconto County community members will gather at 5:30 p.m. March 24 at Oconto City Hall, 1210 Main St., Oconto, to learn more about redistricting, gerrymandering and voting maps in Wisconsin.
Jane Benson from the Fair Maps Coalition is the scheduled speaker.
This event is in response to voting map redistricting happening across the United States. Southern Oconto County Indivisible is organizing this public event to foster conversation and community in Oconto County.
“Voters should pick their representatives; politicians should not pick their voters,” said Pam Kritz, one of the leaders of Southern Oconto County Indivisible.
“We are excited to bring this presentation to our area. I think it’s a great idea for Wisconsin and is something that will ensure gerrymandering stays out of our elections,” added Mimi Gerner, co-leader of Southern Oconto County Indivisible. “Everyone’s vote should count. We should be able to elect representatives that truly represent what people want and what communities decide is best for them … not whichever political party has the best maps drawn to influence their votes.
“We hope to offer more events like this in the future, and get more people involved in participating in political engagement, civics and thinking critically about what would make a difference in our state.”
This event is open to the public, and all ages are welcome.
Southern Oconto County Indivisible is a progressive, grassroots, nonpartisan organization that focuses on community education, local organizing to support progressive candidates, and holding elected leaders accountable to represent the best interests of the communities they represent.
