‘Village of Lights’ underway in Lena

The “Village of Lights” preparation is underway in Lena. This traditional holiday kickoff is scheduled for Dec. 7.

Start the evening by stopping at the Lena Village Hall, then travel to local businesses that will be sponsoring specials, providing treats and inviting everyone to join in on a game of “Blizzard Bingo.” Visit all the participating businesses to get your card signed and earn a chance to win a gift card.

The village of Lena is full of Christmas spirit and invites its residents to join in the holiday fun.

Dig out those outdoor Christmas decorations and get decorating for a chance to win in the Village Christmas Outdoor Decorating Contest.

There are several categories:

• Spirit of Christmas: Best overall light display that captures the spirit of Christmas.

• Griswold: Excessive use of lights and decorations.

• Daytime Visual: Looks as good during the daytime as nighttime.

• Christmas Themed: Carries a theme. Examples are nativity, Disney, etc.

Pathways photo contest winners announced

Top winners of the Shawano Pathways Trails Photography Contest were announced at Pathways’ annual Social and Report to the Community, held Nov. 12 at Twig’s Beverage Museum.

JoRene Gorshe, after an evening outing with the Shawano Paddlers, captured a tranquil moment as the Wolf River reflected a rising moon for her first-place photo.

Isaac Curran took second place with a photo aptly named “Squirrels in the Park,” a landscape featuring bright red foliage balanced against an autumnal sky. Last year, another entry by Curran earned first place.

Next historical society event looks at past memories

What do you cherish most about the past? Is it the songs that defined a generation, iconic movies, classic cars, retro fashion or the taste of favorite foods that remind you of simpler times?

Whatever your memory, the next program from the Oconto County Historical Society, “A Blast from the Past,” will have you reminiscing and smiling. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Beyer Home and Carriage Museum, 917 Park Ave., Oconto.

Adult and Teen Challenge Choir visiting Gillett church

The Adult and Teen Challenge Choir from Milwaukee will present a program of gospel music and testimony at 10 a.m. Dec. 8 at Hillside Assembly, 5890 State Highway 22, Gillett.

Adult and Teen Challenge is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to help youth, adults and families with life-controlling problems to become established in society through faith-based mentoring, education and job training. All programs and services are dependent upon the generous support of friends, corporations and families. Adult and Teen Challenge does not receive any government support.

Holiday decorating fun but should also be safe

Decorating for the holidays is a fun activity many people take part in during the season. Decking the halls can help us connect to family traditions, create beauty for others to enjoy and light up the chilly, dark, wintry nights.

While folks string lights and hang ornaments this year, they should make sure to also keep safety top of mind. While the addition of candles, a Christmas tree and decorations spread cheer, they can also bring some hazards.

Gillett board tentatively OKs Ireland trip

The Gillett School Board has given its tentative approval for a student trip to Ireland during the summer of 2026.

The proposal was brought to the board by agriculture teacher Jacob Timm during its Nov. 21 monthly meeting.

Timm is working with EF Travel, a company that partners with schools to provide a variety of educational tours. The company sponsored a foreign exchange student who lived with Timm’s family when he himself was a middle school student in Gillett.

County board kills ATV campground proposal

A plan to develop an ATV campground and trailhead off the Nicolet State Trail in the town of Riverview was short-circuited Nov. 21 when residents of the area raised objections.

The Oconto County Board of Supervisors was poised to approve a $280,000 bid to build a parking lot at the site on Torsci Lane as the first phase in development, but the proposal was defeated after a lengthy discussion.
