Governor takes tour of Shawano’s rec center

Gov. Tony Evers paid a visit to Shawano on Oct. 10 to tour the Shawano Recreation Center, which is a recipient of $4.25 million from the state’s Flexible Facilities Program.

The center was built in the 1960s, but only minimal upgrades to the building have taken place. The funding from the state will allow the center to be renovated for the addition of telehealth offices, an expanded exercise room, family friendly locker rooms that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and high speed internet access.

Hinze rips into council over new wheel tax

The Democratic candidate for the 6th Assembly District took the Shawano Common Council to task Oct. 9 for the vehicle registration fee, commonly referred to as a wheel tax, it passed last month and accused the council members of approving it without public input.

The fee would be $40 for any vehicles that are 8,000 pounds or less and housed within the city limits, and it would be tacked onto vehicle owners’ registrations on any renewals beginning Jan. 1, 2025, and collected from the Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles.

Molly’s Meadow spreads far, wide over summer

Molly’s Meadow is a new home-based bakery business to keep an eye on.

The sourdough breads and other bakery items created by Megan Wiese on her Bonduel farmstead have grown increasingly popular since she first introduced them in June.

She started her baking journey just over a year ago, after the birth of her daughter, Meadow. Her labrador, Molly, died around that time. The two events sparked the baking bug in Wiese.

Bonduel seeks remedies to revitalize downtown

The village of Bonduel can be a nice place to visit — when it can get folks to stop.

A tour of Bonduel’s downtown area by the village’s new redevelopment authority on Oct. 8 showed some gems in the rough, but mostly the need for more businesses to come in and give people passing through on state Highway 117 a reason to stop.

Many building are closed down and run down, but the redevelopment authority is looking to breathe new life into them. The first step to do that is to create a business improvement district similar to what Shawano has.

Carroll, Moesch honored by Shawano Optimists

Sandra Carroll was named Shawano Optimist of the Year and Gail Moesch received the James Leuenberger Lifetime Achievement Award at the recent Shawano Optimist Club’s annual installation and awards banquet.

In announcing Carroll as the Optimist of the Year, Lorine Raddant, last year’s Optimist of the Year, said, “Sandra is always willing to help, has great new ideas, is a great asset to our club, and has a smile that lights up a room. She’s a great cheerleader and her enthusiasm is infectious. She’s the cream in our coffee.”

Sex offender to be released in Tigerton

Convicted sex offender Douglas A. Mauritz, 50, will be moving to N2901 Split Rock Road, Tigerton, according to information from law enforcement officials.

Mauritz was convicted on Aug. 24, 2015, of repeated acts of sexual assault against the same child (at least three violations of first or second degree sexual assault) and sexual assault of a child, both class C felonies. Both cases were in Shawano County.

He was sentenced 10 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision.

TEDCOR wins $90K USDA grant

The Tourism and Economic Development Corporation for the Oconto Region (TEDCOR) has received a $90,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The Rural Business Development Grant, announced by the office of U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, is expected to be used to provide technical assistance to small, rural businesses located in Oconto County. Assistance will be targeted for those located in the villages of Suring and Lena. TEDCOR aims to serve at least 10 businesses with this assistance, creating five and saving another five jobs.
