Deputies responded to 51 incidents, including a disturbance on Menominee Line Road in the Town of Underhill, fire on Klaus Lake Road in the Town of Gillett, a death investigation in the Town of Spruce, a disturbance on Duame Road in the Town of Stiles, illegal burning on state Highway 32-64 in the Town of Mountain, harassment on Parkway Road in the Town of Spruce, six traffic stops, five traffic offenses, two citizen assists, one miscellaneous traffic incident, one welfare check; three 911 hangups and 10 open lines; two ambulance calls.

Gillett OKs upgrades for police, fire department

With Alderman Jon Gildemeister absent, the Gillett City Council unanimously approved upgrades to equipment for both the Gillett Police Department and the Gillett Fire Department during its May 4 meeting.

The upgrades come in the form of a purchase of a 2002 Pierce Fire Truck for $195,000 and two new police radios at a cost of $8,880.46. both purchases will be made using federal American Rescue Plan Act funds.

In regards to the firetruck, Fire Chief Kurt Hicks said that everything is moving forward with the purchase of the truck.

Anglers take over inland waterways

The kids showed up and the trout cooperated.

Several families headed to Fireman’s Park in the Town of Mountain May 6 for the first day of Wisconsin’s inland fishing season.

While others headed to their favorite trout stream or launched their boat in a lake in search of walleye, the park’s small pond off of state Highway 32 also had its share of anglers.

Dan Derks, of Stephensville, brought his 9-year-old grandson, Porter Derks, of Shiocton, to fish for brook trout that the Mountain Fire Department stocks in the pond.

Information session set on Oconto Falls middle school planning process

The Oconto Falls School District plans to hold an informational meeting in early May to update the public on the planning process for a new middle school.

Voters in November approved a referendum question to replace aging Washington Middle School with a new, modern facility. The information session is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 9 at the old school, 102 S. Washington St., Oconto Falls.

Various user groups have been meeting to discuss features they would like to see in the new middle school, which is expected to open in the fall of 2025, Superintendent Dean Hess said.

Oconto Falls' struggle to find school bus drivers continues

The bus driver shortage continues for the Oconto Falls School District, where parents continue to show dismay over a decision to stop busing children within a 1-mile radius of school buildings.

Parent Brett Schindel expressed concern at the April 17 school board meeting for students who live along County Road I and are not bused to Oconto Falls Elementary School or the high school down the road.

“County I is dangerous; it’s a highway outside the city limits with no sidewalks,” Schindel said. “My main concern is for kids’ safety. I think the district should pick them up.”

Departing Oconto Falls School Board members honored

A six-term member of the Oconto Falls School Board and a one-term member were honored April 17 during their last regular monthly board meeting.

Jan Stranz, who has served on the board since 2005, and Adam Adler, who became a board member the month after schools and businesses were closed because of COVID-19, each expressed their thanks to their fellow board members, staff and community.

”Eighteen years went by in a hurry,” said Stranz, who has served stints as board vice-president and secretary through the years.

Johnson clarifies concerns on business classes

Concerns were raised about the future of the business department in the Gillett School District during the school board meeting on April 20.

Gillett junior Bradin Bjelland said during the public comment portion that it was revealed that the business department was going to be cut during a senior class scheduling meeting on April 5.

Gillett OKs 3K program, child care

The Gillett School Board approved a 3-year-old kindergarten program/wrap-around childcare for the 2023-24 school year during its April 20 meeting.

Gillett Interim Superintendent Wayne Johnson said that the child care committee in Gillett came to a consensus to recommend starting a 3-year old kindergarten program.

“It is more than just child care, there is a lot of pre-learning that goes on,” said Johnson. “The committee discussed wrap around childcare options.”
