School arsonist faces child abuse charges

OCONTO — The man convicted of burning down St. Anthony School in Oconto Falls eight years ago now stands accused of severely injuring a 3-month-old girl in his home.

Vincent J. Enneper, 24, of Oconto Falls, is charged in Oconto County Circuit Court with child abuse intentionally causing great bodily harm, child abuse recklessly causing great harm, first-degree recklessly endangering safety and neglecting a child with the consequence of great bodily harm.

Enneper is scheduled to make an initial appearance Feb. 13 before Judge Jay N. Conley.

Pulaski yacht-maker eyes temporary shutdown

PULASKI — Marquis Yachts is in active talks to sell its manufacturing facility at 790 Markham Drive in Pulaski. But because the sale probably won’t be completed by the end of this month, the company may have to shut down beginning March 1, idling all 344 workers at least temporarily.

Two killed, one injured in two-vehicle crash

Two people were killed and another seriously injured Thursday in a wrong-way crash on U.S. 141 in Lena.

The Oconto County Sheriff’s Department said the accident happened when a sport-utility vehicle driven by Sande Walker, 59, of Oconto Falls, was traveling north in the southbound lanes when it collided with a southbound truck about a quarter-mile north of County Road A near the on ramp.

Emergency dispatch logs indicate the call came in at 5:36 p.m.

Walker and the truck driver, Marvin Lueneburg, 73, of De Pere died at the scene, the department said.

Oconto County Veterans’ records to be digitized

OCONTO — A Wausau firm has been hired to digitize hundreds of thousands of Oconto County veterans’ records dating back more than a century.

The County Board voted 29-1 Thursday to approve a contract with Q Solutions to scan about 9,900 folders containing an estimated 385,000 paper documents of county veterans who served as far back as the Spanish-American War and World War I.

“The purpose of this is to preserve the historical value, properly secure and safeguard the records and improve the efficiency in our office,” Veterans Service Officer Ron Christensen told the board.

Gillett volunteer to be honored

GILLETT — Growing up in a humble family of 10 on a small farm just outside of Gillett helped form a solid background of selflessness for Cora Rotter-Boerst. Family values were at the roots that have led to a lifetime of volunteerism.

Rotter-Boerst is the guest of honor at the upcoming Gillett Civic Club/Business Association Valentine’s Party, scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Main Event, 206 Lemke St., Cecil.

Lakewood DNR station has new conservation warden

A Michigan native who served the country in military deployments to Somalia and Haiti before starting his law enforcement career is the new state conservation warden based at Lakewood in Oconto County.

Jamin Leuzzo, born and raised in the Upper Peninsula Michigan town of Bessemer, was hired by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ Bureau of Law Enforcement in late 2018 to serve the public as a conservation warden assigned to the Peshtigo Warden Team.

Damian Lee Murphy, 18, Abrams, pleaded not guilty to homicide by negligent operation of a motor vehicle in the Aug. 14 crash that killed Albert W. Reppert, 71, of Midlothian, Illinois. A pretrial conference was scheduled for March 19.

Jason L. Mulikin, 44, Kingsford, Michigan, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, in connection with an incident that occurred Sept. 9. Judge Michael T. Judge scheduled sentencing for March 27 and ordered a presentence investigation.

Veterans honored at Oconto Falls High School

OCONTO FALLS — Five local veterans were honored Friday night in the first-ever Military Appreciation Night at Oconto Falls High School.

They included Staff Sgt. Kurt Buhrandt, a logistical specialist for the Wisconsin National Guard who is in his 23rd year of service. He met the night’s master of ceremonies, John Maino, when the longtime media personality was embedded in Afghanistan and Buhrandt was commander of convoy security, driving what Maino described as “the most hostile, most dangerous roads on the entire face of the Earth.”

Oconto County officials fear southern floods and northern wildfires

OCONTO — The threat of fire danger looms in northern Oconto County over the next two or three years, as the southern part of the county braces for severe flooding.

The County Board received an update Thursday from Emergency Management Director Tim Magnin regarding the aftermath of last summer’s windstorm that downed hundreds of thousands of trees, as well as flooding that plagued the city of Oconto and other bayshore communities at the start of 2020.
