Looking forward to year-round tourists

It’s hard to believe this is January in Wisconsin. The weather, always a good topic of conversation, seems to be attempting all four seasons in one month.
I will never complain about the lack of snow or extreme cold during the winter, but I do feel for the people who depend on the tourism dollars that will not materialize at this time. Hopefully the season will get back on track soon.

A recent Facebook post caught my attention. It read: “Believe it or not, 1999 was 20 years ago.” Twenty years? Where did that time go? Some terrible things have happened in our community, state and nation since 1999. I prefer to focus on the good, such as the growth and improvements at the Birnamwood Public Library. Here’s to many more in the next 20 years!

It’s that time of year where there is a bit of a crackle in the air. One year is ending and another is beginning.

Some of us can’t say goodbye to last year fast enough and fear the uncertainty of what this new year will bring. That’s a lot of disappointment to handle.

By the same token, there are people who felt last year was the best year ever and look forward with hope of what the new year will bring.

We should all choose to be like those people.

District finalizing schedule for referendum projects

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood School Board is finalizing plans for the $13.1 million in improvements approved by school district residents in November.

The largest constructions projects included in the referendum are additions at the Wittenberg and Birnamwood elementary-middle schools and a new building, primarily for agriculture classrooms, next to Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School.

New GM for Wittenberg Telephone Co.

Scott Nyman, of Plover, will assume the general manager duties at the Wittenberg Telephone Company from Allen Mahnke at the end of January.

Nyman was hired in August and appointed as Mahnke’s successor on Dec. 7. Mahnke, who will retire Jan. 31, agreed to stay on as long as needed to fill the position and has been overseeing the transition.

“Scott is a great addition to our team,” Mahnke said. “He brings a lot of experience and enthusiasm, which greatly benefits our customers and employees.”
