Former state rep honored by farm bureau

Former state Rep. Gary Tauchen received the Distinguished Service to Wisconsin Agriculture award for his outstanding contributions to Wisconsin’s agriculture industry during the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation’s 104th Annual Meeting in Wisconsin Dells on Dec. 3.

Tauchen’s dedication to serving Wisconsin agriculture has been a theme for the entirety of his life. He earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science from UW-River Falls and went on to found Tauchen’s Harmony Valley Farm near Bonduel in 1976 with his father, brother and nephew.

Give blood or platelets with Red Cross

As people make travel plans to celebrate with family and friends this year, the American Red Cross asks donors to set aside time to give blood or platelets for patients waiting for care over the holidays.

From a record number of people expected to travel to seasonal illnesses and the potential for hazardous winter weather, it can be difficult for the Red Cross to collect enough blood for patients during the winter months.

When donors give a blood or platelet donation in December, the Red Cross will say thank you with several opportunities:

Wittenberg area man dies in single-truck crash

A 74-year-old Wittenberg area man died as the result of a one-vehicle crash in the Town of Wittenberg on Dec. 5, according to a statement from the Shawano County Sheriff's Office.

Lt. Chris Madle said deputies responded to a report of the crash at about 7:03 p.m. on County Road M, just south of State Highway 153. The initial caller reported there was a vehicle in the ditch and the lights were still on.

• Ger Vue, 32, Wausau, pleaded no contest Nov. 29 to three counts of felony bail jumping and a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Judge Katherine Sloma sentenced him to 60 days in jail and levied $2,282 in fines and court costs.

Bowler home destroyed by fire

One person was injured and a home was destroyed by fire the afternoon of Dec. 2 in Bowler.

Bowler Area Fire District Fire Chief Dan Ladwig said the homeowner was taken to a hospital, but he had no other information as to why the man was treated.

The West Rollman Street home was engulfed in flames when firefighters first arrived just before noon.

“I have the shop (Ladwig’s Tire and Lube) right across from the post office,” the fire chief said.

Shawano County ready for winter weather

Just as sure as death and taxes, Wisconsin winters mean snow, wind and ice — and that means snowplows.

For the next four months, the Shawano County Highway Department office will be staffed 24 hours a day to monitor the current road and weather conditions and forecasts.

“We staff 24 hours a day from Dec. 1 through April 1 and even started a few days early this year,” said Grant Bystol, Shawano County highway commissioner. “We monitor the weather through something called the Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS), which is set up by the state.”

Counties, city awarded $100,000 grant

Shawano County, Menominee County and the city of Shawano were jointly awarded a $100,000 grant for seat belt enforcement and $50,000 for OWI enforcement to be used during the first nine months of next year.

Shawano County’s share of these grant funds totals $50,000 for seat belt enforcement and $30,000 for OWI enforcement, funds that are expected to be accepted by the Shawano County Public Safety Committee when it meets Dec. 6. If approved, the resolution will be sent to the county board for acceptance Dec. 20.
