WOW cancels fundraiser and art show

Walls of Wittenberg Inc. has decided to cancel its main fundraiser, the Wine, Beer and Cheese Gala. The event was scheduled to take place April 24.

The gala was also scheduled to open the spring art show where any Wisconsin artists can enter up to two pieces of artwork as part of the juried show. The spring art show has been canceled. WOW will not be collecting art on April 14 as planned.

Small business deals with illness

WITTENBERG — When Laura Jolin and Cary Gorski opened their restaurant in April 2017, they were pursuing their own version of the American dream. The couple planned to work as owners and operators of Baba’s Café and decided to start out small, keeping hours only on Wednesdays through Sundays, primarily for breakfast and lunch.

What they didn’t plan for was what would happen if one or both of them became ill — and certainly they never imagined dealing with a nationwide health crisis.

Married nearly 50 years, Diana and Myron Heistad, Shawano, are several feet apart as they take their daily 3-mile walk on a route that takes them past the county courthouse on Main Street in Shawano on Saturday. Myron Heistad said they weren’t necessarily trying to keep their distance while walking, but said the precautions are a good idea and encouraged everyone to follow them. GREEN BAY – In an effort to further control the spread COVID-19, Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) has implemented updated visitor restrictions at the following hospitals: St. Clare Memorial Hospital, Oconto Falls; St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay; St. Vincent Children’s Hospital, Green Bay; St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center, Green Bay; St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan; Libertas Treatment Center, Green Bay and Marinette.

WBHS senior Lauren Bahr receives volunteer award

Lauren Bahr, a senior at Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School, has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of time to serve their communities and their country, was granted in February by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

Familiar face comes back to Homme Home

WITTENBERG — There is a new executive director for Homme Inc. of Wisconsin, and he’s got a familiar face.

Former Homme administrator Justin Cieslewicz was hired Jan. 13 to take over for longtime executive director Steve Seybold, who retired Feb. 25.

School psychologist Kara Muthig wins top award

WITTENBERG — Kara Muthig was named the Wisconsin School Psychologist of the Year in a March 5 ceremony in Wisconsin Dells.

Each year, the Wisconsin School Psychologist Association gives the award.

“Kara is the best at what she does,” said Garrett Rogowski, superintendent of the Wittenberg-Birnamwood School District, where Muthig works. “She is a tireless worker, trusted by staff, students and families, and is a servant leader that is fully committed to the personal and academic success of all of our students.”
