Three area girls claim state wrestling titles

Three area girls brought home first-place titles from the the 81st annual WIAA Individual Wrestling Tournament and the third Girls Individual Wrestling Tournament held in conjunction Feb. 22-24 at the Kohl Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Winning titles were Brooke Hoffman of Wittenberg-Birnamwood at 185 pounds, Harlow Skenandore of Pulaski at 145 pounds and Taylor Whiting of Lena at 107 pounds. It was Whiting’s second consecutive title.

Oconto Falls’ Bozile takes second place at state wrestling tournament

For the Bonduel boys, wrestling at 113 pounds in Division 3, it was Jaxon Bogacz, and at 150, it was Colin Fischer.

Bogacz lost his first match of the state wrestling tournament 10-2 to Kaleb Lodahl of Cadott. He then lost 11-2 to Lukas Orloff of Pecatonica/Argyle.

Fischer was defeated 5-2 by Logan Peterson of Cumberland.

Lena was represented by Sam Peterson at 113 pounds in D3. He lost 12-0 to Colin Cournoyer of Stratford.

Oconto Falls wrestlers were in D2. Garrett Ganter wrestled at 106, Cole Bozile wrestled at 138, and Nick Trepanier was at 190.

Wrestlers prepare for state tournament

Shawano’s Drake Herm will represent the Hawks at the boys state wrestling tournament this weekend at the Kohl Center in Madison.

At the sectionals in Kimberly on Feb. 17, Herm battled in the finals match but lost 14-0. In his wrestle back, he pinned Ryan Schmidt of Kaukauna in 42 seconds to qualify for the state tournament. His first match was set for the afternoon of Feb. 22.

“Drake has done such a great job all year long,” coach Mike Homan said. “He continues to lead our team, and we are excited to watch him wrestle in Madison this weekend.”

Six Shawano wrestlers advance to sectionals

Six members of the Shawano boys wrestling team will advance to sectional action following a successful round of regional wrestling Feb. 10 at Green Bay Preble.

Moving on for the Hawks will be Dane Hodkiewicz, Owen Montour, Drake Herm, Carsen Herm, Drew Chelberg and Connor Chelberg.

Drake Herm earned his 100th win during his first-round win. He won his bracket in quick fashion with two quick pins.

“Drake has been wrestling really well during the second half of the season,” coach Mike Homan said. “We are excited to see him wrestle next weekend at sectionals.”

Shawano wrestlers clinch conference title

A 72-12 win over Xavier on Feb. 1 clinched the conference title for Shawano with a 6-0 mark.

“I’m most proud of this group for stepping up and wrestling as a team,” coach Mike Homan said. “As we finished our conference season 6-0, I think back to all of the hard work that has been put into the practice room this season. This entire team of boys and girls have worked hard and earned this conference title.”

BOYS WRESTLING: Drake Herm makes finals at Sheboygan North Invite

Drake Herm made the finals and came away with a second-place finish for the second year in a row at the Sheboygan North Invite held Jan. 20.

Owen Montour placed fourth.

“Drake and Owen have been doing a great job lately earning bonus points and really wrestling good matches,” coach Mike Homan said.

Kody Popelka finished in sixth place.

Taking seventh place were Dane Hodkiewicz, Carsen Herm and Connor Chelberg.

Dylan Gartner placed eighth.

Shawano 57, Menasha 17

Shawano downed Menasha 57-17 in a dual meet Jan. 18.

BOYS WRESTLING: Shawano defeats New London

Shawano’s boys wrestling team improved to 10-4 following its 42-31 win at New London on Jan. 11.

The dual started with the 150-pound match. Shawano lost that one but gained points back when Carsen Herm pinned Owen Ross. Shawano then earned a decision at 165 pounds when Drew Chelberg defeated Phoenix Fletcher 9-3.

Unfortunately, the Hawks found themselves in a 21-9 deficit after dropping matches at 175, 190 and 215.

Shawano wrestlers successful at Shiocton

Shawano’s boys enjoyed a successful tournament at Shiocton on Jan. 5, going up against teams from Shiocton, Medford, Stevens Point and Reedsville.

The team wrestled Stevens Point in the opening match and defeated them 46-22, lost to Medford on the last match of the dual 37-32 and defeated Reedsville 78-6.

Shawano won the pool due to a three-way tie in pool wrestling and won on criteria of most points scored.

“We advanced to the championship match vs. Shiocton,” coach Mike Homan said. “In that match, we had some big matches to move us into first place.”

GIRLS WRESTLING: Shawano wins fourth straight tourney

Wrestling at the Rhinelander Hodag Scramble on Dec. 21 game Shawano its fourth straight tournament victory, outscoring their opponents 106-86.

“These girls are really starting to mold together, and they are learning more and more each week,” coach Mike Homan said. “It is very exciting to watch them grow so much.”

Onna Hermann took first place.

BOYS WRESTLING: Shawano places sixth at Hodag Scramble

Shawano’s boys wrestling team finished in sixth place at the Rhinelander Hodag Scramble on Dec. 21. The Hawks scored 138 points, compared to 235 for their opponents.

Drake Herm earned a first-place title for Shawano.

“Drake continues to wrestle well and had a strong showing today,” coach Mike Homan said. “He was great on his feet as usual and continued to push the pace in his matches. He is a lot of fun to watch when he wrestles.”

Owen Montour placed third for Shawano.
