Cookout intertwines people with law enforcement officers

Grilling burgers and hot dogs can attract a crowd, and that’s exactly what the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department had in mind.

Dozens of people flocked to Washington Park in Wittenberg on July 31 to meet some of the county deputies and enjoy a tasty meal. Some of the children even played sports with the deputies. An added touch to the event was face painting, although most of the focus of the event was to introduce law enforcement in a positive light.

Deputies responded to 44 incidents, including vicious animal on High Street in Birnamwood; boat problem at Shawano Lake County Park, W5785 Lake Drive in the Town of Wescott; criminal damage on Old 22 Road in the Town of Washington; criminal damage on River Road in the Town of Bartelme; harassment on Resort Road in the Town of Washington; 10 911 calls; two reckless driving incidents; two traffic hazards; three welfare checks; four crashes.

New K-9 to join sheriff’s department

With the retirement of Arres earlier this summer, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department found itself in the market for a second K-9.

“We have a dog (female Malinois) reserved,” said Capt. Nick Prey, who oversees the K-9 program. “Training will be in mid-November 2024; dates are not set yet. The master trainer is Tony Pallotta from Toronto, Canada. He puts on his own handler training course.”

In addition to a new K-9, a new handler will also be chosen. Prey said two deputies have applied to be the handler, with interviews held July 29.

Shift differential proposal DOA at committee

A shift differential request for Shawano County Sheriff’s Department dispatchers and jail corrections officers was pretty much declared dead on arrival when the county’s Executive Committee met July 17.

While an option to hire one additional person for each area was approved, there is no guarantee those jobs will survive the budget-making process this fall.

That leaves Sheriff George Lenzner and other staff to find alternate ways to entice new recruits and retain the current staff.
