Maulson appointed to Menominee County post

Gov. Tony Evers announced his appointment of Renata Maulson to serve as Menominee County Register of Deeds.

The appointment took effect July 10. Maulson will serve for the remainder of the unexpired term that ends on Jan. 5, 2025.

“Renata Maulson’s background as deputy register of deeds makes her well-qualified to carry out the duties as register of deeds for Menominee County,” said Evers. “She will lead the office and serve the people of Menominee County well in this role.”

Governor declares state of emergency following storms

Menominee and Oconto counties are among the 10 counties impacted by Gov. Tony Evers’ executive order declaring a state of emergency following strong storms that produced damaging tornadoes, high winds, hail, heavy rain and thunderstorms across Wisconsin.

Evers signed the order June 28.

Tornado touches down in Menominee, Oconto counties

A tornado touched down near Keshena and stayed on the ground for nearly 9 miles when severe thunderstorms swept across much of northeast Wisconsin late June 24 into the early morning hours of June 25.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Green Bay office determined the EF1 tornado was on the ground for five minutes starting at 2:27 a.m. June 25. Estimated peak winds were 98 miles per hour.

Officials said the tornado was on the ground for 8.9 miles from Keshena in Menominee County to Berry Lake in Oconto County. The maximum width of the tornado was 90 yards.

Grant to aid Shawano, Menominee counties’ drug disposal programs

The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department and the Menominee Tribal Police Department each received several thousands of dollars in grant money to combat the opioid crisis, officials announced at an April 23 press conference at the sheriff’s department.

Police step up efforts to bust drunk drivers

The Shawano Police Department and the Shawano County and Menominee County sheriff’s departments are stepping up enforcement to get impaired drivers off the roads this holiday season through the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over holiday enforcement campaign that goes until Jan. 1.

The campaign takes place over the holidays to prevent impaired driving crashes and ensure everyone can celebrate safely.

Counties, city awarded $100,000 grant

Shawano County, Menominee County and the city of Shawano were jointly awarded a $100,000 grant for seat belt enforcement and $50,000 for OWI enforcement to be used during the first nine months of next year.

Shawano County’s share of these grant funds totals $50,000 for seat belt enforcement and $30,000 for OWI enforcement, funds that are expected to be accepted by the Shawano County Public Safety Committee when it meets Dec. 6. If approved, the resolution will be sent to the county board for acceptance Dec. 20.

State roads in Menominee County subject of meeting

A public information meeting to discuss several highway projects in Menominee County will be held from 6-8 p.m. Dec. 5 at the College of Menominee Nation Culture Building, N172 State Highway 47-55. Keshena.

A brief presentation is scheduled to begin at 6 pm. The remainder of the meeting will follow an open house format.

Five projects will be reviewed. They all affect Highway 47 and Highway 55 from Keshena to the Langlade County line.

Wilber elected president of state veterans service officer association

Menominee County veterans service officer Bruce A. Wilber Jr. on Oct. 12 became the president of the County Veterans Service Officers Association of Wisconsin, making him the first Native American to serve in that position in the association’s 87-year history.

Wilber also serves as the tribal veterans service officer for the Menominee Tribe, so his election is doubly historic since no tribal veterans service officer previously served as president of the association.

United Way kicks off annual campaign

If everyone in Shawano and Menominee counties donated $1 each week for a year, the Shawano Area United Way would raise more than $2 million to aid local nonprofit organizations.

While that would be a tremendous boost to area groups, the United Way’s annual campaign is significantly less robust. Organizers have an overall goal of $75,000, which amounts to closer to $2 per person for the entire year.

“Our focus is really to work with our community to make sure that it’s healthy, it’s stronger and more vibrant,” said Nancy Schultz, United Way executive director.

Shawanokasic named Menominee County register of deeds

Gov. Tony Evers appointed Mary Shawanokasic to serve as Menominee County register of deeds.

The appointment fills a vacancy created by the resignation of Menomin Hawpetoss on Aug. 4. Shawanokasic will serve for the remainder of the unexpired term that ends on Jan. 5, 2025.

“Having served as deputy register of deeds, Mary Shawanokasic has the experience to carry out the duties of Menominee County register of deeds and have a positive impact on Menominee County in this new role,” said Evers.
